  1. In my very limited experience, some, but not all, carrier-branded air-cards can be locked to the network; this is legal to do here for air-cards, but not phones.

You also have an issue with the DTAC UI.

You could try another SIM, they only cost 50 baht, and the Windows dial-adapter (DUN) with the proper string (*99 whatever).

You could contact DTAC, if locked you can try to unlock it, and get a new/different generic UI, or use Windows.

In general I always recommend buying a non-branded air-card even though they might a bit more expensive.

Maybe fiddle with the APN type: default, supl

works for me with my unlocked AT&T Captivate. Your i747 supports 3G/850 MHz (and 2100 MHz) so should work fine with TrueMove H, DTAC and AIS.

Always remember to save the APN, then restart the phone, then select that APN.

Assume you have an active SIM with a data plan? And coverage?

  3. she ran my account-someone had made two online purchases yesterday for about 6000 baht

Since the OTP is required to complete the transaction, and the OTP was sent to your phone, I'm having a hard time understanding how the transaction could have been completed?

Further you have to proactively register for the iPay, and you have to register for the OTP SMS service.

If you could follow up with more details and the outcome that would be great.

  4. SIMs and mobile data plans are generally independent of each other; you can layer any data plan on to any SIM.

That said, there may be some promotional SIM/data packages which may be advantageous, say for a one-week stay the Tourist SIM. It really depends on your exact situation and requirements.

We'd really need to know how long you are staying, what your budget is and what your monthly data usage might be.

  5. As Vietnam has grown to the be the second largest exporter (first in Robusta - used for making instant) of coffee, there have been many reports about the ecological impacts (deforestation, overuse of fertilizer and water, slave-like conditions for workers) on the country.

There has also been a sever drought, coupled with a drought in Brazil, may lead to much higher prices going froward.

Vietnamese style coffee is usually dripped at the table, and served with sweetened condensed milk, which in my limited experience doesn't do much to reveal the quality of the actual roasted bean.

  6. Anyway, forewarned is forearmed.

Obviously a description would provide more "forearming"? Was this at a particular station? At a particular time of day? Anything useful at all?

As it is, advising people to be aware of their surroundings, and the possibility of pickpockets, is well, hardly novel or useful.

People bump into me, and and I occasionally bump into other people, especially in crowded public transportation situations. Some might even raise their hands as an act of apology for the inadvertent contact. Hardly makes one guilty of a crime.

If you want to port out to TrueMove H your phone will need to support 850 MHz/3G as TrueMove H's 2100 MHz 3G deployments are well behind schedule.

DTAC has a GSM 1800 MHz (same frequency as TrueMove) concession which runs until 2018, so assuming you have DTAC coverage and do not want to buy a new phone, you could port out to DTAC or buy a new DTAC SIM.

You may have GSM 900 coverage from AIS, and your older phone supports this frequency, but that concession ends in 2015, so you'd face similar challenges then.

  8. You may be able to check this on-line, by using the reservation code and your name.

There may be inventory (your specific fare bucket) and day of week issues requiring a re-issue.

To me, after a quick look at cheap buckets, there is a 100 GBP change fee, which is waived in the case of of the death of the passenger. YMMV.

  9. Yeah, no corruption in this two-time PM's cabinets. rolleyes.gif

The lack of shame on the part of these elderly Amart for their role in the current situation never ceases to amaze me. Maybe it's just senility?

He was nicknamed the painter because he always "covered over the sullied reputations" of associates.

Did his younger brother get to keep the 230 million baht he embezzled from the Thai Farmers Bank?

  10. I see real Genuine Windows OS advertised in many, many, many shops.

Honestly, it can't be that challenging.

There is a pinned topic re: on-line retailers which should help. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/61857-on-line-computerelectronic-stores/

Most/all of these shops also have a physical presence in many/most malls

  11. http://store.truecorp.co.th/product/detail/1610/Samsung_Galaxy_S5?ln=en

It looks like, on certain post-paid packages *"Galaxy Starter, Lite, Bonus Max), the 50% discount applies for 24 months. To me those packages look to have significantly higher "list" prices, than other packages, which are then discounted at 50 %

And that 4G/LTE is also included for the first 24 months - note that this is positioned as a 99 baht/month feature even though it has been waived for most/all packages to date.

Note sure if you have to

    order on-line

    finance

    use a certain credit card

  12. I have this vague recollection of many informed posts here over the years that smokeless tobacco products are illegal/not allowed to be imported/not allowed as part of a duty-free tobacco allotment.

I do not understand why the customs should stop it ? It`s within the legal amount of free import.

Even if legal, I believe you are confusing importing with bringing in duty-free goods when arriving from an international location.

  13. There are obviously many legal, official, non-pirated paid sources for many, many, many TV shows like Breaking Bad.

    NetFlix

    iTunes

    Hulu

    Google Play

    Amazon

    and maybe another 50+ sources.

Some/all of these may require the use of a VPN.

  14. I can't help but wonder why they aren't doing this for everyone... why will 2 million customers be affected?

    As the article clearly highlights:

a.) 2 million customers are currently inactive - typically this means their SIM has not registered on the network for some extended period of time; a few of these could of course be outside the country

b.) they have tried to port out - notified customers of the issue and option - between 5.1 and 7.1 million customers, but those customers have not agreed to the port - maybe because they do not understand the issue(s), more likely their handset would not work on TrueMove H.

  15. DTAC selects Alcatel-Lucent for 100G optical rollout, tests 4G

    23 Apr 2014
DTAC, Thailand’s second largest mobile operator, has chosen Alcatel-Lucent’s ‘Agile Optical Networking’ solution to upgrade its existing 3G network and support the rollout of a 4G LTE network that will eventually deliver ‘ultra-broadband’ mobile access to more than 40% of the Thai population. Deployment of the 100Gbps fibre-optic network is already under way in Bangkok, with expansion to other parts of Thailand to continue throughout 2014, the vendor said in a release.
imultaneously, Thai newspaper The Nation reported that DTAC has conducted tests of 4G LTE services on its 2100MHz network in Bangkok, currently used for commercial 3G services. It had been reported at the start of this month by technology vendor Ericsson that DTAC had ‘launched’ 2100MHz LTE services, but it now appears that commercial operations will take a few more weeks to be switched on, sometime in this quarter.
Thai operator dtac launches LTE with Ericsson
dtac TriNet announces the launch of 4G/LTE on 2100MHz for its users in Thailand
Users in Bangkok Metropolitan will enjoy faster mobile broadband services and better network performance
Ericsson is the sole supplier for User Data Management, Evolved Packet Core and circuit core solutions
To meet the needs of a data-hungry new generation of users in densely populated areas, dtac TriNet Co., Ltd, a subsidiary of Thailand's second-largest mobile operator dtac, has assigned long-time partner Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) to deploy a 4G/LTE network.
The 4G/LTE on 2100MHz rollout began in February 2014 and once completed consumers can expect a superior user experience when browsing the internet on their smartphones or downloading movies at much faster speeds. By deploying 4G/LTE on 2100MHz, dtac TriNet will ensure improved network capacity and enhanced performance in Bangkok. dtac will also have a cost-effective network ready for continued data-traffic growth.
  16. Choose what you prefer and live and let live. If I'm happy in Apple's walled garden, what's it to you?

If you're happy in Apple's walled "garden", why the question, "what's it to you"?

The OP was asking (for him/her) a legitimate question.

You know everyone talks about a walled garden but it isn't really is it, the only thing is you need to buy your apps from iTunes but for that you get a guarantee that apps are policed and you ain't gonna end up with some app that's going to steal data that to me seems a good trade off, it's pretty similar to android 90% of uses are going to get there apps from google play but the difference is you could be installing any old crap as what's ion the description is not always always in the tin; yes you can install from elsewhere but even on my JB phone I can install any app from anywhere, iTunes is a bit of a clunk to be honest but I can use something like syncios instead.

I believe that the level if privacy can be fine grains better on a iOS device than it can on a android but I'm not sure which is why in looking for differences I see the one downside is all the google crap on there and other manuacturers apps that cannot easily be removed without rooting.

The one thing I can see a big advantage with iOS is things like FaceTime , iMessage, photo stream, shared photos which are not available on android unless you use google products( which are also available for iOS) but then you are into the world if sneaky privacy google.

You seem to be answering your own question...

What can an android phone do that a iphone cant

Not sure why you're even considering changing? You say you only see one downside - even though you list many, many more - "...the one downside is all the google crap on there...", which for most would be more than enough.
