  1. There have been hundreds of posts on this topic here. I'd review those to get a feel for which shippers are best. Some people get stuff delivered with no add'l charges, others get VAT, Duty, Excise, etc. My vaguest recollection is that FedEx is the worst.

FYI, you can buy a real, localized Nexus 5 here for 16,900 - LG is the warranty agent.

Or buy from the Play Store in the U.S. - the U.S. variant will work fine here - for $349 + $13.99 S & H + sales tax (if any) and re-ship it via shipito. People seem to be landing them here for ~ $430 all in.

  2. Can you go into Settings, Battery and share the details? Is Cell standby taking up more than 5%? Which service provider do you use? You could be just exactly between two base-stations and switching back and forth, that can heat things up and drain the battery.

Do you have a lot of apps. open? Maybe re-start the phone?

No heat, battery or FC issues on my N4/KRT16S. Works perfectly for me.

  3. I sure wasn't planning on letting the miles expire.

There is a significant mileage devaluation coming February 1, 2014 so it might be beneficial to use at least some of your miles before that date. This is the ticket by date, not the travel by date, so you could book travel through to Dec. 31, 2014. Further, depending on your status, changes/re-deposits are free. I just used 140,000 miles for a round-trip BKK-BOS-BKK in first class on several carriers; the total taxes and fees was $76.10 as we still do not have to pay YQ (fuel surcharges) - this latter point could also change at any point in time.

For those holding ticketed reservations beyond March 30, 2014 you may wish to get ahead of the curve and work your changes now. UA Res. are aware of the changes but any systematic re-booking may not happen until Dec. 10, 2013. I wouldn't necessarily count on NH pulling in their departure time, so you may not be able to make a connection. You may be forced to overnight (or red-eye) in NRT, or at least change your NRT-USA flight to and earlier departure. UA waived any re-issue/change fees for me, as they are required to do per the CoC when there is a change in ticketed operating carriers.

  4. Guessing here: you have an AIS/2100 MHz SIM, prepaid, 3 GB monthly plan?

Think you can go up to 4 or 5 GB plans. Just about everything here has a fair-use speed limit, once you reach your cap, which varies from 64 Kbps to 384 Kbps.

You may also be able to cancel an existing plan once you reach your cap, then re-subscribe to another plan.

  5. the tablet does not come with a default SMS application

Forgot to follow up on this...

Android 4.4 allows the option for consolidating all messaging into Hangouts including SMS.

Go into Settings, Wireless & networks, Default SMS app, where you can choose "Messaging" (classic SMS) or "Hangouts". At least that's how it works with 4.4 on my Nexus 4. I think it may default to Hangouts unless you specify Messaging?

Any news on Nexus 7 2013 edition availability in Thailand?

I've seen the 3G variant, 13,500 MSRP. My sense is that maybe that's the only variant Asus/TH localized? But not sure.

  6. Topic comes up frequently and often, usually by noobs.

Yes, taxis are required to transport you but...

there are any, many, many, many reasons why they might not want to, primarily based on your destination, and the routing options to get there. They may only rent the taxi for 12 hours - most exchange at 04:00/16:00 - so may not be able to get to the exchange point in time, they may not be able to get a fare back, there may be bad traffic, they may be low on xNG and know there is no station on your route....

The protocol is to flag down a moving taxi going in the direction you need to go, open the door, state your destination and any routing, then wait for acknowledgement. It's pretty easy and you'll learn it quickly enough.

  7. Most decent, volume-based, unlimited, full speed mobile data plans run for one month, and recur automatically. One cannot hoard/save "bandwidth volume" for use over a period longer than 30 days.

I do not understand why an aircard would be necessarily better than using your iPhone as hot-spot? Assuming you have AIS/2100 MHz 3G coverage just use an AIS SIM, subscribe to a mobile data plan and enjoy. Or try a TrueMove H SIM.

But then maybe there is more to the story?

As always, sharing as much detail as possibile - what is the iPhone model, what kind of SIM -plan/promotion do you have now, what does "marginally successful" mean in this context?, etc. etc. etc.can lead to more focused recommendations.

  8. My main question is can I add data to the Sim I currently own

Based on what little detail you've provided I am guessing that you have a TrueMove SIM.

TrueMove currently only offers low-speed GSM data (AKA: 2G: GPRS/EDGE). So yes, you could layer a mobile data plan onto your existing TrueMove SIM, after you exchange it for a micro-SIM.

TrueMove's GSM 1800 concession was due to expire on 15 Sep. 2013, but was given a 1 year extension.

I am assuming that you want high speed, 3G, mobile data? If so, you'll have to change from TrueMove to TrueMove H, retaining your number/account. Simultaneously you will exchange your old Mini-SIM for a new micro-SIM, TrueMove H will link you existing number to your new Micro-SIM. Then maybe add value, now, finally, you can subscribe to a bundled voice/text/data plan, or subscribe to a la carte voice, text and data plans.

You may have to do all of this True Shop.

Note that your validity/expiration may default to a rolling 60 day maximum; so no more 1 year cumulative expirations.

  9. Do you have TrueMove, or TrueMove H?

How much data do you require? Voice? Texts?

You should be able to exchange your mini-SIM for a micro-SIM at any True shop, including the airport. You will keep your same number.

TrueMove H have a dizzying array of plans, both bundles and a la carte, where you build your own.

    http://truemoveh.truecorp.co.th/3g/packages/ismart/entry/594

Net-net, you can pretty much get whatever you require.

Maybe just have a read through the TrueMove H web-site, then follow-up with details re: your requirements, or questions.

  10. I believe it is that 19 hour flight frpm Singapore through Frankfurt to New York flight (refueling stop only, same plane all the way)

    Nope, you are confused.

Believe SQ are cancelling the direct, non-stop (polar route, A340-500 all J) SIN-EWR service (SQ21/22).

    http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/singapore-airlines-krisflyer/1524863-sqs-super-long-haul-sin-ewr-terminated.html

SQ 25/26 SIN-FRA-JFK remains; sold as SIN-FRA, or FRA-JFK, or SIN-(FRA)-JFK, so not just a refueling stop in FRA per se. Also agree it's off-topic.
