  1. Many/most Thai service providers do offer IR (voice and data) in Japan on UMTS/WCDMA 2100 MHz via SoftBank, and at least one other provider (DoCoMo?).

Have you switched to AWN, AIS's new 2100 MHz subsidiary? Are you pre-paid or post-paid? Have you enabled IR?

Can you share any details re: the specs on your phone/model?

This web-page should provide you with the necessary information:

    http://www.ais.co.th/roaming/en/index.aspx

My phone support 3G/2100 MHz and does roam in Japan using DTAC and my T-Mo (U.S.A.) SIMs.

While AIS do have some roaming packages, I assume you understand that the voice and data rates are significantly higher.

  2. I am fairly certain that any top-up, completed out-bound call or originated SMS can/will extend the validity of a SIM.

But this is really dependent on the specific terms and conditions of your promotion/plan/SIM, and there are dozens of variations.

Can you share any details on your SIM? TrueMove or TrueMove H? What did the packaging say re: the T's and C's? What is your ultimate goal here? What is your situation? What is your budget? Sharing as much detail as possible may yield more/better ideas and recommendations.

If your goal is simply to maintain the number, and/or preserve your current balance, then maybe ask someone in Thailand to pop round the shop and add 10 baht to your number.

  3. I think you have two separate issues:

1.) Is your current SIM compatible with the AWN, which is AIS's new 2100 MHz subsidiary? Based on your time-line I'd say that it probably is a current IMSI-compatible version.

2.) Have you ported out of AIS/One-2-Call and in to AWN? My best guess here is that you have not yet done this. While it is possible to do this Over-the-Air, it may be best to stop into an AIS shop and verify #1, and initiate the port out/in, configure your phone, add value and subscribe to mobile data plan.

Assuming you have 2100 MHz coverage you can/will utilize that network, if not, then you would "roam" onto the legacy AIS/900 MHz network.

  4. Sounds like the restaurant scene in The Godfather.

The victim was into things he shouldn't have been, and was "missing payments."
Not sure how intelligent it is to kill someone who is "missing payments" as they are unlikely to make any further payments.
These guys were cool as concrete, and on target. The victims head is just about missing. Some of the shell casings, rumor has it, are .45s. They shot nowhere else, just the head.
Great detail, are you still traveling or is your GF also a professional "investigator"?

  5. I have had numerous conversations with middle-class Thai's who think marrying someone who has no family support network here, no rights, no abilities to borrow money, no language skills, is culturally different and frequently unintergrateable is not sensible]

Can you quantify "numerous"? Do you mean numerous conversations with one Thai person? Or numerous conversations with numerous Thai people? Or one conversation with numerous Thai people?

    How did this topic arise?

I think it would be challenging to draw any sort of conclusions or even derive some generalizations, assuming that it what you are hoping to do?

Every prospective Thai-foreign partnership would be viewed positively, or negatively, based on many, many criteria, would be my generalization.

  6. There aren't a lot of stand-alone public toilet facilities here, anywhere.

There are (obviously) smallish private toilet facilities within the subway and skytrain stations; you often see employees, and in-station vendors, ducking in to these.

Many/most of the MRT stations are designed with significant retail space on the mezzanine and/or ticketing levels, but only a few stations (Sukhumvit, for one) have opened to date. I am pretty sure there are meant to be public toilets, perhaps on a paid ( 2 ~ 5 baht ) basis, available.

I think most of us have learned to rely on toilets in attached/nearby public buildings/offices/shopping malls.

  7. I wonder what the obsession of Thai people is with dogs and why the everyone thinks they need to own one.

One very famous person here has long had prominent dogs, believe this may have been but one influence?

Dozens of threads by foreigners on "how to bring my dog to Thailand", so it may be a universal thing?

  8. Maybe change your diet? Eliminate any caffeine, tobacco and alcohol, at least until you feel your problem has been successfully addressed.

    Get a complete physical.

Get as much outdoor exercise as possible, during daylight hours.

Work to shift your sleep/wake patterns gradually, like 30 - 60 min. every few days.

  9. I am an expat and it saddens me to see so many expat & tourists looking like they just woke-up from a three (3) day drunk!

Why do so many foreigners present themselves at immigration looking like they just fell out of a trash can?

Please..... have some pride in your actions, clothing appearance & personal hygiene to understand that YOU are representing ALL foreigners to the Thai people when you are in country.

Yes, I already know that I am speaking to the choir.....duh

Why not make your point in person, with the offending parties? Just walk right up to them and tell them what you think.

Not sure posting here will have much of an impact.

Looks like it's in the old Dr. Steak hut?

Have driven by it every day and never noticed it, will try it this week.

Agree that walking from Udom Suk BTS station is NOT an option; it might be 8 ~ 10 Km. rolleyes.gif

    Thanks for the heads up.

  11. I wouldn't futz with 4G/LTE.

Purchase any unlocked USB aircard which supports 850 MHz 3G - some models are 890 - 990 baht, purchase a TrueMove H SIM, add value, subscribe to a plan. Done.

Do you, or will you have a smartphone? If so, details please.

You can buy air cards, SIMs pretty much anywhere here. TrueMove H, DTAC and AIS all do have shops at the airport.

  12. Folks, that's the gods honest,

Without a lot more details re: exact carriers, routing/day of travel, CoS, booking code I'll have to challenge you on this.

Yes, many carriers offer employee, relative, buddy-pass, retiree travel benefits which vary greatly but are generally subject to availability.

Some/many airlines have to OpUp pax from Y to J and J to F to accommodate oversell situations, or even accommodate their own or a partner's IRROPS. Op Ups generally go to single pax who are FFP members.

Some/many airlines do have Buy Ups, whereby one can purchase a stand-by upgrade at check-in. For example TG have a published schedule.

Most airlines, or their local ground agent service providers, have automated procedures - which are difficult to overwrite, and are subject to subsequent audit - to manage int'l departures wait-lists (Departure Management systems), which at T-24 typically shift to local airport control.

Upgrading a non-FFP pax from economy to first (bypassing business on 3-class metal) without any other extenuating circumstances is a recipe for disaster. Said beneficiary ends up bragging about to his seat-mate (or to the unwashed masses on public forums) - who paid 150,000 baht for his seat and is a loyal customer - which then p*sses off the loyal customer. It's all about "protecting the integrity" of the product, and anyone with even a passing familiarity with SQ or CX would be familiar with this concept/practice.

  13. Contact the seller.

    Contact the shipper.

Contact your local Thai Post (mail) delivery person.

Contact the resolution center; you'll have an extra 12 hours given the time difference but still a few days, right?

IME, in the U.S. anyway, sellers usually just ship a second and even third unit, on smaller items like these.

  14. Report: US May Have Bugged Merkel Phone for More than a Decade

The U.S. National Security Agency may have bugged German Chancellor Angela Merkel's phone for more than 10 years, according to a news report Saturday by the German weekly Der Spiegel.
Der Spiegel also cited a source in Ms. Merkel's office saying U.S. President Barack Obama apologized to the German leader when she called him this past Wednesday to seek clarification on the issue.
  15. Some say there are quotas on allowed single female visitors at any one time to be in the country, and once that figure is met more scrutiny is involved. Obviously this has to be managed on an hourly basis.

    Just Google "Singapore Denied Entry".

By far the worst situation is one where someone has been allowed entry. goes for a day visit overland to Jahor Bahru, and then is denied (re-) entry, while all their belongings are still in a hotel in Singapore.

Personally I think this should be done at the point of departure, but understand the quota is better managed at SIN ICA.

  16. If in doubt get a second opinion from a well-referred dentist, Problem solved/scam avoided.

Posting a warning without any details is useless. A bit like saying "be careful crossing the road".

  17. My observation is that if you're paying a fixed price, you're paying way too much. Taxi drivers don't give you a fixed price that is less than a meter price, and there is NO doubt about that.

FWIW, for destinations outside the BMA, fixed-fares are the rule/law per the DLT.

Any fixed-price should be reasonable, and agreeable to both parties. Yes, it will likely be more than the meter, but one also has to factor in weather, destination, availability, desire to get to a destination in a timely fashion, etc.

For radio dispatched taxis there is an additional 20 baht fee.

    More about CGI...

Meet CGI Federal, the company behind the botched launch of HealthCare.gov
Over the past few weeks, if you've been paying attention at all to the unfolding disaster of people trying and failing to sign up for Obamacare online, one name keeps coming up: CGI Federal, the IT contractor that has orchestrated most of the Healthcare.gov Web site. By most accounts, it's been a complete train wreck, for reasons both technical and bureaucratic. Here's what you need to know about the company at the center of it all.
How did CGI land the Healthcare.gov contract?
CGI Federal's winning bid stretches back to 2007, when it was one of 16 companies to get certified on a $4 billion "indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity" contract for upgrading Medicare and Medicaid's systems. Government-Wide Acquisition Contracts — GWACs, as they're affectionately known — allow agencies to issue task orders to pre-vetted companies without going through the full procurement process, but also tend to lock out companies that didn't get on the bandwagon originally. According to USASpending.gov, CGI Federal got a total of $678 million for various services under the contract — including the $93.7 million Healthcare.gov job, which CGI Federal won over three other companies in late 2011.
