It stinks, Nike and the famous brands, they are just ripping people off, charging rip off prices around the world, all there items are made in Thailand or China, some of the copies are better quality, when my wife was 13, two Thai-Chinese men came to her village to offer her work in Bangkok, her and a friend went, they were working 12 hours a day 7days a week, making trainers for these rip off companys, the company was sending these to the uk and the states and the retail would be 70 to 80 quid, my wife was living in squaler for 4 years and earning a pittence, :o so do not preach on this forum about copied goods, good luck to anybody who makes a dime :D

  2. I also have a few snakes in my garden, my fault, I dumped a truck load of big sandstone rocks, they are to make a ornamental koi pond, but not got round to doing it yet, on the phone yesterday to my brother in law, he told me the snakes have moved in, they have made a nest under the rocks, now i have snakes, sparrows, two problems, (the mrs aint to bad) :o

  3. Sparrows the bigest problem, another problem regarding Wildlife, not snakes at the moment, but these red ants, have a bench in the garden, when sitting down reading the paper they bite me to ######, if any of you have the same problem , i think i have found a cure, spray vinager where they are, the problem solved, then you can use some to put on the fried sparrows, tasty :o

  4. They have a habit of making nests in the valleys of the roof, if you do not watch this you will have ceilings come down, the nest blocks the water outlets, every couple of months i get a couple of guys in the village to go in the loft and clear any debrie and all the valleys, catch it when you can and you will not have any problems with the house, the only problem i have is the same as you, getting rid of the sparrows.

  5. When you have your own Business employing people, paying a stamp for yourself, think about this one simbo, were you working for somebody else?, if i got sick or finished work tomorrow i would not be able to claim jack shit off the Government, that is because i am self employed, then you get all these <deleted> around checking if you are doing things right, they know f all, but they will retire on a government pension when 50-55, car provided for them when they are working and then find another job in another government apartment and get another pension for that, it stinks, no wonder people want to leave this shithole, what i have got i have worked for, damm hard, i think i will have a lot better life in Thailand, if i am sensible.

Also no way would i send my daughter to a public school over in the uk, as far as i am concerned somebody wants to teach some of the teachers first, and what bkok mike has said i totally agree about tax etc.

  6. How can you be spending more here than in the UK.

Yes, electronics can cost more, but not by a huge amount. (except, oddly, plasma TVs are ridiculous here).

But if I go shopping in Tesco in the UK, I'm lucky if I have change from £80 (a little over 5,000 baht) if I have a trolley of groceries. - Here, I'd be shocked if I reached 2,000 baht. And I buy groceries a lot more often than I buy DVD players or computers.

The only major expense here, that is a LOT more expensive, is imported cars. - But you can buy locally built cars (like a Honda Jazz, or a Mitsubishi G-Wagon) for less than in the UK (I'll admit the Shogun Sport isn't exactly the same as a G-Wagon, but it is £6K more in the UK, so that makes up for the leaf springs in the rear suspension), so that's a matter of choosing to pay the 65% import duty.

But, once you start looking at the price of property, or services like haircuts, or having a live-in maid. There is no comparison at all with the UK. A cleaner coming 3 hours a week in the UK costs about the same as a live-in maid here, and the last time I had a haircut in the UK for what I pay in a hairdressers here, was more than 20 years ago. Yes, you can pay the same for a house here as in the UK (I did) - but the house you get isn't exactly the same size.

On the downside, there are a few things you have to get here, that you don't in the UK. - Air conditioners, for instance, and the accompanying electricity bills. But on the other hand, I don't have any heating bills on the up-side. (and my electricity bills for the year are still less than a council tax bill in the UK).

    Mike,

Agree what you have said, cost of living far more cheaper in Thailand, and the cost of motors in thailand is far less than the uk, i bought an isuzu, fully loaded for 720,000 baht, i took all the details of this to a local dealer in the uk, he quoted me £23,000 , the basic car was £16,000 and the rest was the extras and vat, and it costs me about 900 baht to fill it up, in Uk it would cost £70, and fuel has gone up again this week, rip off britain.

  7. Think about this one mate, it may hurt,  , When i move to Thailand i will be 40, if i live to 90 that is another 50 years, i will not be working, i will have to make cuts in my spending etc, also have you read about the pension fiasco in the UK, you now will have to work untill you drop, Mr Blairs idea, you have to work and pay taxes in the UK for 44 years before you get a full state pension, now this will increase, if you were a dosser, never done a stroke, never paid into the system this will not afect you as the government keep dossers and all the shit in this country (UK), they do not worry, are you one of them, have i pissed you off, i bet i have now  , i appriciate the comments on this forum of the other couple of guys, thanks guys, if you are in Buriram i will buy you a beer, and if you are ever there Neeraman, i will but you a tapwater, sorry thats all i can afford

You have got to look into the future.

Neeraman, wish you good luck you may need it more than me.......

Why do you think I am a dosser? Why do you think you have pissed me off? Are you trying to piss me off?

You haven't, but I think I may have you. If I have, I must apologise, I read your note at a bad time.

I left the UK when I was in my mid 20's after a couple of years in the oil business after Uni. Many people thought I was crazy leaving that very well paid work, maybe I am. I came her relatively young, I am still in my 30's. That doesn't make me a dosser, does it? I don't like the UK, similar to you. I got out before you, and for that I am grateful.

I have worked here for 12 years sometimes 7 days a week, 6 days at least for most of those years. I know many guys who have worked in the UK, especially in the oil industry who can retire now. All they have to do is rent out their house and they can live comfortably in Thailand.

I am jealous that I don't have a house back "home". I didn't choose that conventional way of job, motgage, fancy car. I have had a great time and glad I haven't wasted the last 12 years. I may die tomorrow, and believe me, I will be content. 12 years ago, I used to get paid 20 quid an hour or 1400 baht/hour. More in a week than I get in a month here! I was not happy though driving around in my flash car etc etc.

I don't understand guys like you worrying about money, are you better than the rice farmer living next to you in Buriram? Let's just leave it there.

To answer your original question - I think you will need about 60,000 baht a month to be comfortable. I need about 30,000 , also in Isaarn. I have earned a lot more, and needed a lot more but have gradually felt more comfortable on less, and learned how to control my money. You will probably need more when you come than after a few years living here.

Don't worry about the future, in 20 years or so, you will be an old age pensioner and might get a pension from the Govt(something I won't-least of my worries), you could even think of selling one of your properties to get by in Isarn. A few million baht can go very very very far. Don't worry, after 20 years in Isarn most people get to know how to make that much money work :o

    Good luck.

ps. why not start a business here.

Thanks neeraman, thanks for the advise, it is good, i just like to get all my facts togeather before the big move, i also have a couple of kids, so got to send the one to school in thailand, she is only 2, anyhow if you get in the bamboo i will now buy you a beer, not a tapwater, all the best and thanks for the advice, it is appreciated.

I do get a bit of an income a year from the rice, about 120,000 baht, not bad, i am going to find something to do just to earn this 20 to 30,000 baht a month, i want to sit on my capital and get by on what i can get in Thailand, i have a bit of rent coming in from two condos, so i think i will get by if i am sensible, i wil also invest some of my cash, i must do something otherwise get bored and lead to drinking heavy, i have seen this with a few of my mates.

Thanks Guys, your comments have helped a lot and are sensible, and given me a few ideas, keep em coming, all the best

  8. Hi Guy's, moving to Thailand once i have sold my Business, got the house all built and also got other properties and a 4x4, so once i move do not have to worry about building etc, i am forty and fed up with all the hassle in the UK, high taxes, tosser tony, etc and all the red tape and hassle in running your own Business, how much cash do you think i will need to live a comfortable life, i will be living in Buriram, with my Mrs and the one kid, the other will stay in boarding school in the UK, I will appreciate your comments.

Are stupid or an just showing off?

You have a house(and other properties), car. You can afford to put your kid in boarding school in the UK.

Ain't going to even bother answering your question, just think again :D

You already have a comfortable life. Interesting to seee if you survive in Buriram.

good luck, you will need it, but not financially.

Think about this one mate, it may hurt, :D , When i move to Thailand i will be 40, if i live to 90 that is another 50 years, i will not be working, i will have to make cuts in my spending etc, also have you read about the pension fiasco in the UK, you now will have to work untill you drop, Mr Blairs idea, you have to work and pay taxes in the UK for 44 years before you get a full state pension, now this will increase, if you were a dosser, never done a stroke, never paid into the system this will not afect you as the government keep dossers and all the shit in this country (UK), they do not worry, are you one of them, have i pissed you off, i bet i have now :D , i appriciate the comments on this forum of the other couple of guys, thanks guys, if you are in Buriram i will buy you a beer, and if you are ever there Neeraman, i will but you a tapwater, sorry thats all i can afford :D

  9. In my house, the bedrooms were very hot, not because of the ladies, because of the sun etc, all the time got to put the air con on, but we have had the loft lined and it has cut the heat coming from the loft area, it acts the same as loft insulation in the uk, the thai equivelant keeps some of the heat out, it does help, also if you get vertical blinds on the windows which you can close in the day, they are not that expensive, the loft insulation are like big foil sheets that you put in the loft and they reflect the heat, go to a good builders merchants or pick up a thai magazine on building thats how i came across it, all the best.

  11. I have been told if you want to buy a condo on finance that one of the only banks that will do it is HSBC, as this bank is global, and they have branches in Bangkok, my friend has done this from the UK, but he has been a customer with them for a number of years, also sometimes the agent selling the condo may arrange a loan, as these days in Thailand you can buy a condo quite reasonable, compared to the western world, take a look at some websites property for sale most of these have info on this.

  12. I have taken a number of oils back to the UK, of thai scenes, beach scenes etc, bought them in Pattaya, I just took them off the framework and rolled them up in Tubes, no problem with thai officials, only problem you may have is when coming into your country, if customs stop you, they can not confiscate, only if they are copies, monalisa ? etc, I do not think Uk customs know there art that well, also one time i brought back a framed oil of A thai lady with a baby on her back, one of the hilltribe ladies, that was about 4 foot x 2 foot, it was packed well and i got it back no problem.

  13. Any of you guys had this done to you ?, helped a ferang out who was skint, he was a good friend of mine, also married to a Thai, he wanted to buy a bungalow but did not have any money untill he sold a property in the uk, a bungalow came up in my village for 300,000 baht with one rai of land, bargain, I bought it for him and told him when he has the cash pay me back, which he did and was very gratefull at the time, since then the same problem as before, he is skint, he told me he was thinking of returning to the uk to find work, which he did and also brought his wife, i offered his wife a job and also found this guy a job in a factory, one more problem nowhere to live, I told them they could have a furnished apartment rent free, they were very pleased, and i told them maybe one day you can do me a favour, he started work but did not have enough money to buy a car, he went to a loan shark who tried to charge him £8000 for a loan of 2750.00, right rip off, he asked me could i lend him money for the car, so i agreed, i lent him the money at £78.00 per week for 12 months, i was making a bit on the loan, he did not mind this, so i got documents drawn out and he signed, then one day my wife's friend rang her up, she had been talking to this couple and they told her i was ripping them off by telling them to pay the rates, and the electric, also saying that when he finds a flat closer to his work they were moving out overnight and not telling me, also she would finish work and not let me know, not even giving me two weeks notice, i was really pissed off, with all the favours i have done them you are treated like this, today i think they got the message, as they found out i knew what they were planning, so now the balls in my court, look out :o

  14. Go straight to Buriram, just on the outskirts you pass a long block of shop houses and a housing estate on the right, there is a junction just after where nobody stops, and no white lines, turn left here, follow the road, go over a small concrete bridge then just over the bridge a set of Traffic Lights, turn right on these and that is the main road to SATUK, if you go straight over, it will take you into the city.

The junction that i have mentioned left to BURIRAM right to HUEYRAT. this is a bad junction, Sh-- myself :o here a few times going home.

Let us know how you get on, all the best and have a good trip. :D

  15. From Surin take the road to Buriram, Once you get onto the outskirts of the city, first set of lights hang a right towards SATUK, Buriram airport is on that road about 26 kilometres ?. not that far ,been there many a time, i have a pad on the Buriram surin road.

From Surin go on the road, The 226 SURIN-KRASANG-BURIRAM then at the lights in Buriram you want the 219 BURIRAM -SATUK.

hope this is of help to you. :o
