  1. That's the Kuang reservoir at Doi Saket. There is a restaurant to the southwest of the easternmost dam. More closer to home is Huay Tung Tao to the north of CM, at the foot of Doi Pui & Doi Suthep. Food available, & better hiking, waterfalls nearby. To get there, head west along Huay Keaw road to the Phucome Hotel, turn right & follow the irrigation canal, past the 700 yr stadium. Keep going til you see signs for Huay Tung Tao.

  2. I have lived here a few years and have yet to meet even 1 that claimed to be ex-special warriors of any type. Most of the outrageos boasting and bs I hear (read) is on this website.

Met an Aussie chap in Mad Dog a few years back who claimed to be ex special forces. So, these folk do exist here. Personally, I thought he was full of sh!t.

  3. Totally agree with you. It's a great site, when it works. Fortunately I get great 360 views from my windows, so the "stick your head out the window & look" back up still works. This method worked yesterday & i correctly decided to cancel a hike on the eastern rim of the valley. smile.png

  4. The only drawback is parking. Unless on a bike, you are better off to park on the main road and walk down as it's not far.

They used to have a car park on the vacant lot across the road, a few metres towards Airport. Or maybe that lot is no longer vacant, it's been a while.....

  5. You may need to bring the picture of what you want i.e "bayonet type fitting light bulb" (very busy place and I don't think anyone speaks English)

and go to this place google map 18.78025,98.986371

(Every one goes there, if they don't have it then it's getting difficult)

I recommend that place, & some of the lasses speak very good English.

  6. As I've said elsewhere, already over 2.5M of rain with a possible 4 more months of (heavy) rain to come in Ranong. It's not every day like it was last year but when it rains it's heavier than last year. The stream behind the house broke it's banks 2x last year, which wasn't normal. Usually a weekly event, as it is this year. 4m plus rain in totak last year v average of 3.3m. I hope it doesn't flood, wife's cousin had enough problems in BKK

Fortunately, rain falling on Ranong doesn't affect BKK or central Thailand.

  7. Try Foremost. I agree that many have a rather off taste. Just like the beef. Have you seen the "Soi" cows that these food products come from. Skinny, spiked hair cows, wandering around the sois looking for garbage to eat.

But anyway, Foremost is pretty good.

They have dairy herds here, milk doesn't come from "soi cows eating garbage"

  8. To be honest, much as me thinks the man is a clown, I doubt very much there'll be floods this year. Up here in the north, reservoirs are fairly low, rainfall has been low. Totally different from last year, when reservoirs were full not long into the rainy season, the rains were very heavy early, continuing throughout the rainy season.

The monsoon season is not over yet, nobody can predict the amount of rainful in the coming weeks, who knows. If Bangkok has set up it's barriers and resources then ares north of Bangkok will suffer greatly. The main issue is deforestation in the north on both sides of the border, without all of thr plantation to soak up the rains it runs of into rivers etc. I personally think there will be flooding of some kind this year, and the future for Bangkok isn't rosey anyway, it is sinking. in 50 years time I doubt it will be what it is today, 100 years maybe it won't even exist.

I was in Bangkok this week as I was coming back from Surin and everytime I am in Bangkok I feel depressed. I cannot understand why farang choose to live there, I really can't. To each their own of course, but I would prefer to live in a rural village with no farang, bars or showers than Bangkok, just my opinion there smile.png

True, the monsoons aren't over, hardly begun. That's my point. Last year was exceptional. Early rains & more than usual, & mismanagement of the reservoirs. Even if we have record monthly rains between now & October, I can't see anything approaching last year happening. Just my opinion. Even still using the sprinklers on my lawn sad.png

  9. Does the GBP 62,500 have to in cash deposits or will a combination of cash & investment funds suffice?

    The guidance says this :

The source of the cash savings must be declared. Any legal source, including a family member or other third party, will be permitted, provided that the applicant’s partner, the applicant or couple (as appropriate) can confirm that the money – which cannot be borrowed – is under their control.

The cash savings may be held in any form of bank/savings account. In the US (and any other country with such provision), this can include, for those of retirement age, savings held in a pension savings accounts which can be immediately withdrawn: 401k, Roth IRA.

Paid out competition winnings or a legacy which has been received can contribute to cash savings.

    And this :

In respect of the use of cash savings to meet any shortfall against the income threshold under the financial requirement:

To be counted, the applicant’s partner, the applicant or both jointly must have cash savings of more than £16,000 (the level of savings at which a person generally ceases to be eligible for income-related benefits), held by the applicant’s partner, the applicant or both jointly (but not with a third party) for at least 6 months at the point of application and under their control.

    And this :

Dividends or other income from investments, stocks and shares, bonds or trust funds: These must be owned by the applicant’s partner, the applicant or both jointly.

Interest from savings: The savings must be held in the name of the applicant’s partner, the applicant or both jointly.

    Thanks.

  10. There is another 'newish' DIY mega-store that I went to a few weeks ago and thought it was excellent. It is the new Nappadol Panich and it is on the road to San Kamphaeng on the right. I can't recall how far down but I think it is at the road that connects to Saraphi. I found stuff there that I could not find in Home Pro, Global House, etc. Very good selection. Maybe 3 times the size of the other Nappadol Pannich shop.

Home Expert? On the outer ring road / SK road. It's been there 2 or 3 years or more. Bought some 8m extendable ladders there - they had to order from BKK.

Hmmm....not really sure about Home Expert. I needed American Standard parts that they didn't have at Nappadol Sansai and they couldn't order them for some reason. They referred me to the 'new' Nappadol San Khampaeng store. Looked fairly new to me. Not sure about a ring road. I think it was farther out??? Sorry I'm not too clear on exactly where it was. I was in a hurry that day and left for Phuket the next day.

Home Expert is the larger out of town branch of Nappadol Panich in San Kamphaeng. It still looks fairly new, but it's been there a while.

  11. Mazda BT50 Pro auto 4 door August delivery... apparently, and thats without waiting 6 months on a model that is still 6 months away from delivery.

Mazda seem to be more co-operative than Ford. But of course it could all be dealer B.S.

Or Mazda can't find an export market for the BT50? laugh.png

  13. expat farong makes no difference to me. That is just a part of the culture I have no problem with. As for high roller I really think expats with higher incomes is better. elektrified has a fair amount for a person with only a family of three. But I would consider it just a expat with more wants than me and a higher income.

Thanks for considering me a "high roller". I only wish... What makes you think you know what my income is any way???

    What a bizarre post!

That's one of the charming things about Chiang Mai for someone who isn't a high roller in their own country. Here if you spend 100K baht per month you're hi-so, a high roller, and your conspicuous consumption is the target of contempt from fellow farangs who know in their hearts that they spend the correct amount each month and that anyone who spends more must be a fool. But take that 100K per month back to your home country, and you're just another guy shopping at Walmart.

    Indeed that is so true...

All I said in the entire thread is that I can't live on 30K THB because I have a family, school expenses, etc. and he has me pinned as a 'high roller'!

And ONLY 9 rooms!!!!! We've got 10 in our humble abode, if you include all the bathrooms of course, which is where I do my business ;-)
