Anti-Israel protests in Bangkok fuel concern over Israelis

Two anti-Israel protests have been held outside the Israeli embassy in Bangkok over the past two weeks, drawing groups with sharply different motivations, according to an analysis by Khaosod English senior staff writer Pravit Rojanaphruk.

Pravit said concern over Israeli conduct in Gaza, the occupied West Bank and Iran had converged with suspicion towards what some Thai critics call "grey Israeli" visitors and expatriates. The term is used by critics alleging disrespectful behaviour, opaque business dealings or attempts to gain excessive economic influence.

He said some Thais fear Israelis could become entrenched in property, tourism and other businesses, or undermine Thai sovereignty. These are perceptions held by some protesters, rather than findings yet established.

Different groups, common protest

Pravit described two strands among demonstrators: Thai ultranationalists focused on alleged "grey Israeli" activity, and others whose objections centre on Israel's military actions and treatment of Palestinians.

He cited claims that Israeli expatriates, including some who have acquired Thai citizenship, are involved in building a large Chabad House in central Bangkok, expanding cemeteries and operating businesses in Phuket. Critics quoted in the analysis argue that Israeli interests are effectively behind accommodation, transport, restaurant and tour businesses in some areas, with limited benefit for local people.

The analysis linked the mood partly to high-profile cases involving Israeli tourists accused of brash or culturally insensitive behaviour. It also placed the protests in the context of Thai economic stagnation, xenophobia and a history of concerns about foreign influence.

Gaza and West Bank concerns

Pravit also pointed to international reporting on the Gaza war and violence in the occupied West Bank as a major factor shaping opinion.

He noted that the UK government had warned Israel over tenders for more than 1,200 housing units in the E1 area near Jerusalem, which Britain considers a "red line". The UK has said settlement expansion could fragment the West Bank and weaken prospects for a contiguous Palestinian state and a two-state solution.

According to the analysis, Britain is considering restrictions on goods and services from West Bank settlements and limits on British firms financing, supporting or advertising settlement projects. Israel has warned that unilateral British sanctions could harm diplomatic ties, and has threatened retaliation. Israel denies the allegations and has closed the British consulate in Jerusalem.

Pravit also cited a Channel 4 News report saying the UN had recorded nearly 2,000 Palestinians injured by Israeli forces or settlers this year, with 85 killed, while three Israelis had been killed.

Potential diplomatic impact

The Thai-Cambodian conflict had also heightened fears of outside threats. Veteran activist and former Yellow Shirt leader Sondhi Limthongkul, who co-led anti-Cambodia protests last year that attracted about 10,000 people, led Thursday's anti-Israel rally, attended by an estimated 300 to 400 demonstrators.

Pravit said a larger mobilisation in coming weeks could prompt the Thai government to try to appease protesters, potentially affecting Thai-Israeli relations. He added that Israel's ambassador to Thailand, Alona Fisher-Kamm, would play an important role in handling the issue.

The thing is, when you come to any Country outside your own, the first thing to learn is how the land lies with the local population, clearly, there has been no recon work been done here, as you say arrogance took over, this is what we do, so we'll carry on.

What happened to your friend is worrying, wherever it is, not a good look.

Well if it's a synagogue run by Chabab then it is of great concern. I don't know that to be the case. I remember going to a Chabad house on Samui about 15 years ago and I was definitely welcomed as an American Jew. However I don't know whether or not things have changed and if so to what extent.

Thai people will judge all Israelis and all Jews because of it

Yes, agree, but not sure how a Thai would know someone is Jewish with a different passport (provided they don't have an Israel flag sewn on to their daypacks). Anyway, Jews and Israelis should learn from this - regardless if they think it's unfair. Some years ago, the Chinese government was horrified at the bad publicity its tourists were getting in Thailand and acted. Chinese tourists can still be loud and to some annoying, but I think they've learned to be more aware of the cultural sensitivities due to their government's intervention. Aside from illegal businesses - a problem with foreign nationalities from many countries here - the Chinese aren't in the news as much anymore.

What a huge crock!

Thais don’t even Go Vote without getting paid.

Thousands of Thais protesting in the streets -because they read something or someone else told them.

Surely thousands wouldn’t have kept quiet, until now, suddenly they hate Jews and hate Israel.

But, considering, how prolific the payoffs are here…I think they may have gotten paid to protest...maybe funded by an adversary. Either way, the protestors gained financially from participating in a protest.

"Surely thousands wouldn’t have kept quiet, until now, suddenly they hate Jews and hate Israel."

Keep in mind that Israel has killed thousands of Palestinians* in the last several years including many children. Plus netanyahu (and s a few other keneset parliamentarians) have made a lot of anti palestinian / anti muslim comments / been very destructive of palestian houses / schools and more. There;s little doubt in my mind that this generates strong anti Jewish feelings.

I think the mob includes some of the better educated Thais who know about what Israel is/has been doing against the Palestinians in a thinly veiled attempt to annex all of the land from the river to the sea and more north and south. But I also agree with others, that it is also part of Sondhi's flock - his rental mob that fly into action whenever he tells them there is a valid cause. So it's a bit of both. We'll see them again protesting another nationality. Sooner than later I suspect.

According to this, a Jewish network controls over 10 Billion Baht in assets and real estate in Thailand.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGz1Y3H-kJ0

A Thai-born Jewish businessman remains at large, facing no charges.

Comments from the comments section of the video:

This poses an extreme danger to the nation!!!

And anyone who isn't biased and is genuinely interested to know what Thais are thinking, the comments section of this video gives a good idea of why Thai people are protesting. Something that cannot be obtained on a farang forum where farangs living here barely understand or care what Thais are thinking.

Regarding Chabad, I just read a comment in the comments section of this video and I think I understand why Thais are objecting to Chabad houses.

It's not just the Chabad. It's because these organizations have so much money that they are buying land adjacent to the Chabad and it creates an enclave where Thais don't feel welcomed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMta6q0XMRU

Shabad is not a Jewish synagogue, but a gathering place for Jews. Those with money buy up neighboring land to expand their territory, seizing the area and designating it as a special administrative region, from which Thai citizens have no rights whatsoever.

Sabad is a small headquarters.

A central hub for evil plots against the Thai people and our country, Thailand. Goal: To seize control of Thai territory.

Jews came to Thailand but established communities that didn't respect anyone. Thai people didn't want them to live freely; instead, they seemed to want to occupy and oppress Thai people.

It looks like they might be going after "Rabbi Joseph" for not paying his fair share of taxes.

The Revenue Department is in tears as it reveals the formula behind 25 companies run by Rabbi Joseph, raking in billions while paying only 1% in taxes.

Just watched this video, dubbed into English, the Thai's seem very upset about this and are really chasing those connected with it really hard, in 7 days there will be answers, and if anything is proved dodgy, consequences.

Protesters have gathered outside the Israeli embassy in Bangkok to protest against offensive behaviour by Israeli tourists, and alleged inappropriate land acquisition strategies.

Al.Jezeera propaganda network.

Notice that they intentionally left out the racist Jew hating signs and rhetoric.

Thais,

All Thais?

Most Thais,

Mostly Muslim Thais?

You have no idea based on a few modestly attended protests

Go watch the video, or just listen to it while going through all the comments in Thai, which on YouTube can be easily translated in to English, at the click of a button, this has gone out nationwide, yes, we know 5% of Thai's are Muslim, but still I think the majority of Thai's are of the same opinion, especially when you hear what the Thai government official are saying.

Weren't you crying the other day about how the locals attitude towards you had changed for the worse? Now here you are asserting that we don't know how they feel. Pick a side. 😊

You've been told for decades to behave respectfully. But we can see that old habits die hard. Still here behaving arrogantly.

JT - I think you've got your head in the sand :) Thais are hugely nationalistic, and if anyone claims from a Chabab that 'this land is not Thai land" then they (the Thais) will 'see red'.

One person said something stupid.

Chabad officially has not said that.

Yes I know many Thais are inflamed now.

Never disputed that at all.

But I have no idea what percentage of Thais nationally support the racist Jews out messaging You don't know either.

Depends who said it .

If it was just some random person, certainly the Israeli embassy isn't responsible for speech of all their nationals and do we even know he was Israeli?

I don't think anyone supports that message, apart from a few hard-line southern Muslims. Regardless of what posters in that video might display, I think the real message is 'anti-Israeli', not 'anti-Jewish'.

Something worth noting.

Thais demand respect from foreigners but it s largely a one way street as foreigners ha e almost no rights in Thailand.

We're not supposed to demand respect in return.

That's just tbe way it is like ot not

My point is in the context of the hysterical rise in racist Jew hatred in Thailand is that the continued diplomacy of the Israeli embassy has limits.

Push them too far and the previous good relationship between the nations will end.

Go overboard on Israelis in Thailand and Israel may replace their Thai workers with Cambodian. I have no idea what action by Thailand would trigger such a break but I'm sure that such a scenario is possible if Thailand pushes this scapegoating hysteria too far.

Basically what I'm saying is that the Israeli government very much wants to preserve the historically good relationship..

They're willing to eat some crow to try to smooth the waters and move on from this current ugly hysteria.

But Israel has cards too if pushed too far
