Anti-Israel protests in Bangkok fuel concern over Israelis

Two anti-Israel protests have been held outside the Israeli embassy in Bangkok over the past two weeks, drawing groups with sharply different motivations, according to an analysis by Khaosod English senior staff writer Pravit Rojanaphruk.

Pravit said concern over Israeli conduct in Gaza, the occupied West Bank and Iran had converged with suspicion towards what some Thai critics call "grey Israeli" visitors and expatriates. The term is used by critics alleging disrespectful behaviour, opaque business dealings or attempts to gain excessive economic influence.

He said some Thais fear Israelis could become entrenched in property, tourism and other businesses, or undermine Thai sovereignty. These are perceptions held by some protesters, rather than findings yet established.

Different groups, common protest

Pravit described two strands among demonstrators: Thai ultranationalists focused on alleged "grey Israeli" activity, and others whose objections centre on Israel's military actions and treatment of Palestinians.

He cited claims that Israeli expatriates, including some who have acquired Thai citizenship, are involved in building a large Chabad House in central Bangkok, expanding cemeteries and operating businesses in Phuket. Critics quoted in the analysis argue that Israeli interests are effectively behind accommodation, transport, restaurant and tour businesses in some areas, with limited benefit for local people.

The analysis linked the mood partly to high-profile cases involving Israeli tourists accused of brash or culturally insensitive behaviour. It also placed the protests in the context of Thai economic stagnation, xenophobia and a history of concerns about foreign influence.

Gaza and West Bank concerns

Pravit also pointed to international reporting on the Gaza war and violence in the occupied West Bank as a major factor shaping opinion.

He noted that the UK government had warned Israel over tenders for more than 1,200 housing units in the E1 area near Jerusalem, which Britain considers a "red line". The UK has said settlement expansion could fragment the West Bank and weaken prospects for a contiguous Palestinian state and a two-state solution.

According to the analysis, Britain is considering restrictions on goods and services from West Bank settlements and limits on British firms financing, supporting or advertising settlement projects. Israel has warned that unilateral British sanctions could harm diplomatic ties, and has threatened retaliation. Israel denies the allegations and has closed the British consulate in Jerusalem.

Pravit also cited a Channel 4 News report saying the UN had recorded nearly 2,000 Palestinians injured by Israeli forces or settlers this year, with 85 killed, while three Israelis had been killed.

Potential diplomatic impact

The Thai-Cambodian conflict had also heightened fears of outside threats. Veteran activist and former Yellow Shirt leader Sondhi Limthongkul, who co-led anti-Cambodia protests last year that attracted about 10,000 people, led Thursday's anti-Israel rally, attended by an estimated 300 to 400 demonstrators.

Pravit said a larger mobilisation in coming weeks could prompt the Thai government to try to appease protesters, potentially affecting Thai-Israeli relations. He added that Israel's ambassador to Thailand, Alona Fisher-Kamm, would play an important role in handling the issue.

Depends who said it .

If it was just some random person, certainly the Israeli embassy isn't responsible for speech of all their nationals and do we even know he was Israeli?

This is comedy gold, so it is widely reported that someone in the Chabad says to a Thai official this is Israeli territory and you question whether he is Israeli, so if he isn't Israeli why on earth would he say what he said, come on, man up, of course he was.

Now I am wondering if there is a possibility that the comment may not even have been said at all.

After browsing some Thai media sources, I'm not convinced they don't have a hidden agenda. Just speculating, though.

Did he show his passport.

Has the person been identified?

If he was a Chabad official that's one thing.

If he was just some random moron, it's another.

Can you identify exactly who he was?

Has official Chabad EVER said that is their policy? OF COURSE NOT!

Thai officials inspecting the Chabad House in Patong, Phuket, were met with an unusual exchange on July 23 when a man allegedly claimed the premises were “Israeli territory“.

The incident occurred during an operation led by Deputy Interior Minister Polapee Suwannachet. Officials were inspecting businesses as part of a crackdown on suspected nominee shareholding and unauthorised foreign business operations.

Deputy Interior Minister Polapee Suwannachet could identify him, as he immediately rejected the remark, saying Thailand’s laws apply equally to everyone in the country.

“This is Thailand. Everyone on Thai soil must comply with Thai law. No one has the right to claim sovereignty over Thailand.”

Allegedly - exactly. There's no proof of anything. You need to take his word for it. It's not written or recorded anywhere.

Based on another suspicious Thai news story I came across, I have come to the conclusion that I will not be trusting the Thai media fully. They are capable of playing politics as well as anyone else to achieve their end goals.

Has the Chabad House in Patong denied that anyone made the statement?

It's the same point you make on every thread mentioning j's or israel.

Zero nuance just attack attack attack!

IMHO the only thing that binds jews is 'grievance culture'
and an appeal for special treatment.

It's not an ethnicity since women can marry in and convert, it's not a religion since most don't believe
but they sure as hell stick together - even when fellow Jews do something terrible.

ie. Here's the story of how the ADL was formed:

  • Mary Phagan, 13, was found dead in the basement of the National Pencil Company in Atlanta in April 1913. She had gone there to collect her wages. There was evidence suggesting rape too.

  • Leo Frank, the Jewish superintendent of the factory, was arrested and ultimately prosecuted for her murder.

  • Frank tried to blame Jim Conley, a Black factory sweeper/custodian a court found that Frank had killed Phagan and had ordered Conley to help move her body and write misleading notes. Conley became the prosecution's key witness.

  • Frank was convicted in August 1913 and sentenced to death.

  • Georgia Governor John Slaton commuted Frank's death sentence to life imprisonment.

  • In August 1915, a group of armed men kidnapped Frank from prison, took him to Marietta, and lynched him.

The ADL were formed to defend this POS.

The Chabad group may be bringing in too much investment in real estate and Thai elites may feel threatened?

So you may never know who said what. All is fair in love and war.

Who knows what's going on? My brain is not sophisticated enough to understand these power plays going on.

The real story .

You forgot the mention that the Jew was framed for the murder due to anti semitism and that's why the ADL was formed

he Case of Leo Frank

  • The Murder: In April 1913, 13-year-old Mary Phagan was murdered in an Atlanta pencil factory.

  • The Arrest: Leo Frank, the Jewish factory manager, was arrested.

  • The Trial: The trial featured intense public hostility and widespread antisemitism, with crowds outside shouting threats against Frank.

  • The Verdict: The court convicted Frank based largely on changing testimony from Jim Conley, the factory janitor. Historians and later reviews showed the trial was deeply unfair and driven by prejudice.

The Founding of the ADL

  • The Response: Deeply concerned by the rising wave of antisemitism surrounding the trial, Sigmund Livingston founded the Anti-Defamation League in September 1913.

  • The Mission: The organization was created to stop the defamation of the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment for all citizens. [1]

Later Events

  • The Commutation: In 1915, Georgia Governor John Slaton reviewed the case and changed Frank's death sentence to life in prison because the evidence showed serious doubts about his guilt. [1, 2]

  • The Lynching: An angry mob broke into the prison later that year and lynched Frank in Marietta, Georgia. [1, 2]

  • The Pardon: In 1986, the State of Georgia granted Frank a posthumous pardon, recognizing the state's failure to protect him or provide a fair tria

He could?

What is your source for that?

If he could why hasn't the name and official role IF ANY with Chabad not been made public.

I tend to believe someone did say that very stupid thing,

But unless the person saying it had some kind of official role with Chabad, it has clearly been blown way out of proportion fueling the hysteria here.

Similar to the stupid my money lady.

Many of you and yes of course many Thais infected by social media are seeing what one stupid lady said as reflecting all Israelis and all Jews.

That is incredibly wrong and unfair and it is feeding the fire of the scapegoating of Israelis in Thailand which has now expanded into racist Jew hatred.
