Anti-Israel protests in Bangkok fuel concern over Israelis

Two anti-Israel protests have been held outside the Israeli embassy in Bangkok over the past two weeks, drawing groups with sharply different motivations, according to an analysis by Khaosod English senior staff writer Pravit Rojanaphruk.

Pravit said concern over Israeli conduct in Gaza, the occupied West Bank and Iran had converged with suspicion towards what some Thai critics call "grey Israeli" visitors and expatriates. The term is used by critics alleging disrespectful behaviour, opaque business dealings or attempts to gain excessive economic influence.

He said some Thais fear Israelis could become entrenched in property, tourism and other businesses, or undermine Thai sovereignty. These are perceptions held by some protesters, rather than findings yet established.

Different groups, common protest

Pravit described two strands among demonstrators: Thai ultranationalists focused on alleged "grey Israeli" activity, and others whose objections centre on Israel's military actions and treatment of Palestinians.

He cited claims that Israeli expatriates, including some who have acquired Thai citizenship, are involved in building a large Chabad House in central Bangkok, expanding cemeteries and operating businesses in Phuket. Critics quoted in the analysis argue that Israeli interests are effectively behind accommodation, transport, restaurant and tour businesses in some areas, with limited benefit for local people.

The analysis linked the mood partly to high-profile cases involving Israeli tourists accused of brash or culturally insensitive behaviour. It also placed the protests in the context of Thai economic stagnation, xenophobia and a history of concerns about foreign influence.

Gaza and West Bank concerns

Pravit also pointed to international reporting on the Gaza war and violence in the occupied West Bank as a major factor shaping opinion.

He noted that the UK government had warned Israel over tenders for more than 1,200 housing units in the E1 area near Jerusalem, which Britain considers a "red line". The UK has said settlement expansion could fragment the West Bank and weaken prospects for a contiguous Palestinian state and a two-state solution.

According to the analysis, Britain is considering restrictions on goods and services from West Bank settlements and limits on British firms financing, supporting or advertising settlement projects. Israel has warned that unilateral British sanctions could harm diplomatic ties, and has threatened retaliation. Israel denies the allegations and has closed the British consulate in Jerusalem.

Pravit also cited a Channel 4 News report saying the UN had recorded nearly 2,000 Palestinians injured by Israeli forces or settlers this year, with 85 killed, while three Israelis had been killed.

Potential diplomatic impact

The Thai-Cambodian conflict had also heightened fears of outside threats. Veteran activist and former Yellow Shirt leader Sondhi Limthongkul, who co-led anti-Cambodia protests last year that attracted about 10,000 people, led Thursday's anti-Israel rally, attended by an estimated 300 to 400 demonstrators.

Pravit said a larger mobilisation in coming weeks could prompt the Thai government to try to appease protesters, potentially affecting Thai-Israeli relations. He added that Israel's ambassador to Thailand, Alona Fisher-Kamm, would play an important role in handling the issue.

I think Israelis are an easy target for the Thais.

Thais are fed up with foreigners skirting the rules, buying houses and setting up companies either nominees.

Israelis put their head above the parapet three times in the last year.

First “My money built your country”

Second “Don’t you know this is Israeli territory?”

Third, threatening to kill a zoo owner and offering a reward for his death.

Thais accept a lot of things but the first and second point above really p?ss them off.

They’ve made themselves public enemy No.1 in many peoples eyes.

That was not Israelis.

That was three separate individual incidents that went viral online.

You failed to say what YOU think which leads me to believe that you think Jews Out rallies and shutting down Jewish religious obervances is OK. No dude.

Some things are about having a moral compass.

Knowing the difference between right and wrong.

I don't hear that from you.

In return, there are often crackdowns on bad and illegal behaviour. That is what is happening now.

The implication is that those isolated incidents represent all Jews and all Israelis in Thailand.

They may be the social media inflamed perception of many but in no way whatsoever does it reflect objective reality.

Yes, but many host nations have strongly curtailed mosques that had political affiliations. However, nobody does that with Chabad for some reason. Even though Chabad is highly political.

Maybe because Chabad is so small and its impact so miniscule it's on nobody's radar? I never had even heard of them in Thailand until this story started dominating the headlines recently. I'd bet you could round up every Jew attending these places and they wouldn't amount to one percent of the Russians and Chinese doing illegal property grabs and running money laundering scams. And you want to compare to the number of mosques spreading around the once Christian world? There are city streets being shut down in major European and American cities by Muslims spilling out of their mosques and laying claim to their turf.

My moral compass states that I don't have the evidence in front of me. Thais are not happy with the behaviour of Israelis in Thailand. That is obvious. I would hope the innocent are not harmed and anything deemed harmful to the Thai people and everyone else, is removed.

Chabad makes 2 billion every year and has locations in 100 countries, they're not small. Granted their individual Chabad houses may be relatively small but they are attended by sufficient number of jews that their numbers in Pai have swelled to a significant enclave. You'd think the Russians and Chinese would be bigger problems given their population size, but this does not solve issues like Pai.

Precisely the problems with Muslims spilling out of mosques is what we have with Israelis spilling out of Chabad houses in places like Pai. Except in Pai the Chabad places seduce Israelis to live in Thailand on top.

If you are allowed to live in Thailand, so should anyone else be allowed.

As long as they don't cause problems.

Still not clear to me what the protests are actually about and it seems no one on here knows for certain.

Some Thai Muslims and Western Anti Semites don't want Jews living in Thailand .

Its quite simple really

So Thais are worried about undue Jewish influence in Thailand? I just asked AI to compare the number of Chabad Houses versus the number of Buddhist temples in my old home region of North Texas.

Buddhist temples = 35+.

Chabad Houses = 18.

No, it isn't that simple. That's just the way you attempt to portray it. If they were good and peaceful, there would be no need to protest.

Nick Carter's question is pertinent. How many Thais have been killed by Jews in recent years? How many Thais have been killed by Muslims in the same time period. Answer to the first question is Zero.

As indeed they are, however, this is what causes the problem. Because for better or worse, not all nationalities have the angelic, law-abiding and straight forward nature that the author of this post has. The reality is that you or I, Brits, Germans, Americans, Swedes, Danes, etc, we do not, as a rule try to create alternate universes tailored only for our own kind. We may have a local restaurant with Sunday Roasts, an Irish pub etc. but we do not have Chabad houses that celebrate our chosen people status, in a mystical-nationalist manner, the way Chabad has. We do not seek to erect facilities solely geared towards our own kind. In an Irish pub everyone is welcome. In a Chabad house, even the Thai police was told to stay outside.

The Israelis are qualitatively different. And Thais are noticing how that they are causing more problems than others, as indeed the Romans already knew thousands of years ago.

Again, that is not an accurate equivalence, the Buddhist temples do not have the 2 billion USD a year that enable them to mount campaigns in Thailand that seek to bring in thousands of Thais. This is what Chabad houses do. Hence the fantastic 54% increase in Israeli tourists year on year.

What question was that?

Are HAMAS residing in Thailand? Do they have headquarters there?

Israelis are no more bad behaved than any other nation .

Infact, I don't ever recall seeing any Israelis at 2 AM with their shirt off fighting ladyboys and fighting security down walking street .

That ALWAYS seems to Westerners doing that

Obviously they think the Chabad and Israelis are doing something much worse than the odd fight with a ladyboy.

Maybe you should stop treating the locals as if they are fools. They know what is going on, even if you don't want to discuss it.

What more evidence do you need?
Are you suggesting Jews out and other racist Jew hating signs at the protests were fake news?

Are you suggesting that the Jewish religious observance in Phuket was not cancelled out of concerns about violence related to the street crowrd of inflamed Islamists in Phuket?

I find your entire POV disingenuous.

That's true about the Kosher food.

In my locations they are the only source for Kosher food and religious Jews feel they need to eat Kosher.
