Bang Lamung police seek ID of man found in canal

Police in Bang Lamung are investigating after the body of an unidentified Thai man was found floating in a public canal on Friday, July 31.

The man had a rope tied around his neck and had likely been dead for at least two days, according to the initial assessment at the scene. Police have not yet established the cause of death and have send the body for a post-mortem examination.

Body found beside canal bank

At about 12.30pm, Police Lieutenant Colonel Sorasuphan Aodthonsrianan, an investigating officer at Bang Lamung Police Station, was alerted by Sawang Boriboon Pattaya rescue workers to a body in the public canal off Soi Chaiyaphruek.

Chonburi forensic officers were called to inspect the location.

The body was found face-down, caught near the canal bank. The deceased was wearing black shorts and a long-sleeved jacket bearing the words "Guard Pattaya".

Police said the body had begun to swell. No valuables or documents that could identify the man were found during a search.

A witness told officers he was at work when local residents called out for help after seeing what appeared to be a person floating downstream.

He ran for more than 200 to 300 metres along the canal before jumping into the water and grabbing a rope. He then discovered that the person was dead.

Police appeal for information

Officers photographed the scene and recorded the initial evidence. The body will undergo a forensic examination to establish the exact cause of death and confirm the victim's identity.

Bang Lamung police have asked anyone with a missing relative, or anyone who may know the deceased, to contact the police station with information. Police have not yet announced whether they are treating the death as a crime or suicide.
