Car Hits 83-Year-Old Woman Crossing Sattahip Road

Oh dear... What on earth was a person doing crossing the road there.

Very fortunately the car driver had a dash-cam, there really isn't much she could have done to avoid the lady you ran across the road without even looking.

The lack of self preservation once again astonishing - I feel sorry for the car driver who'll have to live with this.

Another facet of this:

The old lady 'could' have walked under the bridge which would have been a safer crossing point, but safety clearly was not on her mind.

This area really needs a pedestrian bridge... but would the old dear have used it ? there was another story not so long ago about someone getting killed crossing the road underneath a pedestrian bridge.

She hails from a time when one could perhaps amble down a road. The rest of this old lady's life will never be the same. I can see the idea of a pedestrian bridge but they are not popular. Usually too steep and for me many have steps that are too small. I find them daunting.

Even when you try to cross on a zebra crossing, catch a car stopping. In fact you need to run for your life to cross, despite being on a pedestrian crossing. In Bangkok the lights do the job and stop the cars. But in cities like Hua Hin, when you do find a pedestrian crossing, you risk your life each time you try to cross. Very bad image it gives.

My heart goes out to this old lady but she was not at any kind of crosswalk.

That implies a deliberate act - your narrative is flawed. Watch the video - the old dear ran across the road without even looking or checking for oncoming traffic....

The driver had no chance to avoid her.

No one intentionally hit the woman. She came running out from somewhere she should not have been. Its sad but this time its not the drivers fault.

Generally I would be the same thinking as you as its usually the norm. But this one is clearly different.

Surely less daunting than crossing 6 lanes of 80kmh traffic ??

Valid point on the design - the design could be less steep with larger steps.... The real issue of course is the location of a fast road next to urban settlement.

Some of the original housing and properties may have been build along an originally slower smaller road that was expanded. But a lot of the property is more modern and the road enlarged to three lanes each way without a sensible means to cross to the other side.

Sensible planning would prevent the building road side property, or redesign the main road to go around the small hamlets and villages - but thats very 'developed world' thinking - however, this is the root cause of this incident - Housing / town and road planning without safety and traffic in mind.

Most towns are built this way, its a natural progression of development - but usually, better traffic calming should be utilised, or fencing to prevent anyone crossing at all.

Its an issue elsewhere - years ago the 8-10 lanes of Sheikh Zayed road in Dubai was a regular slaughter ground for laborers trying to cross the road - with the nearest crossing (bridge) KM's away - large fences and blocking pedestrian access across the central reservation solved that issue (mostly) - the same 'could' be carried out in Thailand - but that still doesn't help the people who need to get to the other side.

The reality higher speed roads 'should' be built around urban areas, not through them - cost of course is the issue - when lives carry a greater value to those in positions of authority and accountability is real, perhaps things will improve (one day).

No crosswalk anywhere near there. Why didn't the driver slow down or swerve or do something? maybe on the phone like all the other thais

This is a ridiculous take. Saying that it is just as dangerous to pick any spot in the road to run across as it is a crosswalk.

And "the image" bs again. Its the 3rd world. Everyone knows it. Everyone knows that crossing the road in Thailand isn't the same as Switzerland.

It wasn't the drivers fault last time either. This driver had slightly more time than the previous one actually. And yes, I know that driver was charged.

Since most of you think the Thai police always do the opposite of the right thing , that should speak volumes.

If there's no crosswalk then you have to find one. And if Thai's are always on their phone like you say, then its an even bigger reason to find a crosswalk.

I got with what I have seen from years of experience. Many of the stories about people getting hit happen at zebra crossings.

Uh of course ppl get hit at zebra crossings. That is where the majority of foot crossings is. Pedestrians try and beat the light just as much as drivers do. That does not mean that crossing anywhere on the road is not still way more dangerous

On Sukhumvit between Pattaya and Sattahip it's not unusual to see people running across, just not enough crossings, she thought i can walk a km to the crossing or run the road like I've done for many years

Also the driver should have spotted the lady about to cross, I'd call it careless driving Thai style, people always crossing so should be aware

Why ? She popped out from no where at a place not designated for pedestrian crossing.
