Bangkok police are investigating the death of a female newborn found in the freezer compartment of a hotel refrigerator in Hua Mak, Bang Kapi, after a 21-year-old Thai woman reported that she had miscarried.
The woman, identified only as Ms A, contacted Hua Mak police on September 29. The case was reported by Thai media the following day, September 30.
Police said the body was found frozen solid inside a black rubbish bag in the freezer compartment. Officers reported no external wounds or signs of assault.
Forensic examination will determine cause of death
Police Lieutenant Colonel Thuwanan Ngoenyuang, an investigator at Hua Mak Police Station, attended with Police Colonel Prasopchok Iampinit, the station superintendent, and other officers.
The team also included Police Lieutenant Colonel Sawapon Kha-angu, Police Lieutenant Colonel Kittichok Lipthaisong, investigation officers, forensic personnel, Police General Hospital forensic doctors and Poh Teck Tung Foundation rescue workers.
Ms A was alone in the hotel room when police arrived. Officers found a strip of pregnancy-termination medication in a drawer of the dressing table and kept it as evidence.
She told investigators that she had met a Chinese man through a dating application and had sex with him. After learning later she was pregnant, she said she bought pregnancy-termination medication and took it herself.
According to her account, she later developed stomach pain and delivered the baby, who died. She said that, in a state of shock, she placed the child in a rubbish bag and put it in the freezer.
Woman says she wanted a religious cremation
Ms A told police she subsequently went to a clinic in the New Phetchaburi Road area for a medical examination. She said the clinic found her to be physically well.
She said she contacted police because she wanted to arrange a cremation for the baby in accordance with religious rites.
No charge had been brought against Ms A at the initial stage of the investigation. The infant's body will be sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine at Police General Hospital for examination.
Investigators need to establish whether the baby died in the womb or died after being placed in the freezer before deciding whether any charge should be filed.
