Foreign Man Refuses to Pay Dental Bill in Pattaya Clinic

A foreign man fled a dental clinic in Pattaya without paying a 400 baht treatment fee, leaving staff frustrated and prompting a police complaint. The incident occurred on 30 April 2026 at around 10.40am at a clinic on Pattaya South Road, Chon Buri. Staff said the man also made an offensive gesture before escaping on a motorcycle.

According to the clinic manager, Ms Thanaporn, 42, the man, who stated to staff he was an American aged 27, entered the clinic claiming severe tooth pain and requesting urgent treatment. He appeared dishevelled, with a smell resembling cannabis and displayed behaviour suggesting he may have been under the influence of a substance. Despite this, the clinic proceeded with standard procedures, including an X-ray and treatment, after clearly informing him of the cost, which he accepted.

After the treatment was completed, the man’s behaviour reportedly changed abruptly. Staff said he became loud, argued with employees, banged on a table and refused to pay the agreed fee. Taking advantage of a moment of distraction, he left the clinic quickly, mounted a motorcycle and fled the scene, raising his middle finger at staff as he departed.

A dental assistant described the suspect as wearing a white sleeveless shirt and green-black shorts, with tattoos covering both arms. She said he was the first customer of the day and expressed disappointment, noting that the clinic had provided care in good faith, but was taken advantage of.

The clinic manager has urged authorities to tighten screening measures for tourists, particularly those displaying behaviour that could lead to problems. She also called for police to track down the suspect and pursue legal action, stressing that even small amounts should not go unpunished to prevent similar incidents.

Police at Pattaya City Police Station have accepted the complaint and are gathering evidence to identify and locate the man. Officers said further action will follow once sufficient information is obtained.

Is the dental clinic properly registered / certified?

Are the dental staff all correctly qualified?

Like most drugs weed can lead to psychosis/psychotic episodes. Most people can use it safely a few can't. Those who can't should leave it alone.

I've said this countless times, but am met with the whole 'it relaxes you' brigrade.

Just like any other drug, when it's abused, smoked massively, it can cause some massive psychosis effects. My mate was smoking it everyday for a week, really hitting it hard - it was causing some massive bizarre behaviour (including violence) - then when we left for Singapore to continue our holiday and he came off it, he was totally messed up - AGGRESSIVE beyond belief where i actually thought he could do some serious damage.

If you have a little joint before bed, relax and go to sleep then sure no issue at all. But alot will smoke it copious amounts, mix it with alcohol too.

What's going to happen is that if this becomes common the clinics, dentists, shops, etc will require payment before services are rendered

Hotels has been doing that, in form of a guarantee, for as long as I remember. Cant see it make any difference if other business asked the same, either by CC or cash

That's a cheap xray and treatment, 400bht,and my guess Russian not tin tank!

There is no treatment that would cost only 400 baht. They probably charged him a consultation fee without treating anything. Sounds like the clinic manager has a chip on her shoulder and hates foreigners and it's that attitude that made him upset enough to flip her the bird and skip a 400 baht bill. It's amazing how Pattaya - where the economy is 90% reliant on foreigner money - is full of Thais who have a seething resentment against foreigners. (it's understandable to be frustrated with a**hole tourists, but you gotta at least like or be interested in foreigners to work in a 90% tourist spot.

Savvy guy, but didn't factor in the facial recognition technology from the picture Thai Customs took off him at the airport. He'll be identified and blacklisted swiftly back to FLA or wherever in....5, 4, 3, 2...

I wonder if he got any relief from his toothache? Did they do anything or just take Xrays and then tell him extraction will be 5,000 baht? Something about this article is fishy. First how they know he is 27 and a yank. Second no mention of fixing the toothache. If he was stoned he might have thought 400 fixed the problem and they thought 400 would find the problem.

Not totally exonerating him no matter what you don't flee a bill.

He'll pay a 500 baht fine, say sorry, and be on his way as long as he pinky promises never to do it again.

Question - would he have done this in Singapore? There in you ask - why does he comfortable doing this in Thailand? That's the answer to the issue rite there.

That would the cheapest local dentist for a simplistic tooth extraction, or a paid consult at a dentist where it should be free (virtually anywhere).

Can't trust dentists in Thailand, I had several times that they told me i needed work done while it turned out to be false.

You probably have your reasons for disliking Thai dentists but despite most I know offer a free consult, why SHOULD it be free?

The guy worked hard all his life, had to be better than the others at school and college to get to dental school, spent another 5 or 6 years plus those he has by now adding to his job experience. Why should he do anything for free?

The dentist has been cheated by some drugged moron, who left the place insulting him and showing him the finger and your reaction is to comment about Thai dentists not being trustworthy.

The clinic should be inspected on not follow regulations and procedures, one would be to do a intake on new patients which includes a passport copy, filling out any medical details as well checking your blood pressure optionally. Fine her 10,000 for that.

There is no regulation saying clinics must keep a copy from the passport of it´s patients.

All they need to ask are name, family name, date of birth and any medical conditions or medication which could be important for the clinic to know, like allergies to antibiotics.

And a signature of course.

If the patient fails to inform the clinic correctly, gets the wrong medication and dies from an anaphylactic shock, the clinic will face no charges.

I have met quite a few guys who somehow feel all this negativity, maybe even hate, from Thais towards foreigners or as you put it "Pattaya is full of Thais who have a seething resentment against foreigners."

I have always asked them the same question - and never got an answer.

Maybe you can help me out. This was my question:

Why are you still here?

Vietnam now offers free flights + luxury hotel while getting treatments, implants cost just 20K baht too over 60K for the same in Thailand. Just a few days ago Vietnam did 6 organ transplants from 1 brain dead patient to 6 other patients, with 200 people, with success.

It's just funny at this point, they really stand no chance against these Vietnamese, all economy and business will slowly bleed to them. It even shook things up in China, they are impressed by Vnam, that says plenty. China gov also capped implants to 600 USD each.

Remember this dentist in Chiang Mai wanting to take me for half a million, saying my lower teeth would be done within 2 years max, meanwhile we are now 12 years later, not a single issue.

Ahh so it's not just the joooos who are out to get you. It's dentists, especially Thai dentists. All dentists charge a fee for an exam. A consult is not an exam. A consult is where the dentist provides an estimate of the cost of treatment. exams are charged for. Dentists have to cover their expenses and are not charities.

You do not appear to understand what a dental implant is or what an appropriate dental treatment is. The cheap low cost "implants" are not standard dental implants. They are instead the equivalent of permanently affixing a denture plate in the mouth. This type of device is associated with complications and dental hygiene issues as food and tissue debris becomes trapped under the dental plate. The higher priced dental implants are in respect to the standardized course of treatment for a dental implant. A titanium anchor is put into the jaw bone, and a healing period must occur. Sometimes a bone graft is required. Then, the crown (false tooth) is attached. Materials sourced from Europe or the USA cost more than the lower quality local region sourced screws and crowns.

Wonderful that Vietnam was able to do 200 organ transplants from 1 donor. Did you pick that up from the Mirror or the Sun?Good for you that you have no "issues" with your teeth. On the other hand the people who are exposed to the bad breath and and who see the brown rotting teeth, may say otherwise.

Some of the blame in on the weed brigade don't seem to realize that it is indeed possible to drink a fifth of rot gut take a few pills and then take a few hits or smoke a joint....while i do not know i would guess that the weed was the least of the causes of his bat <deleted> crazy behavior. If all he did was smoke a joint I seriously doubt he would have gone into a rage.

As for those who seem to want to blame this incident on the dental clinic? You would prefer that they turn him away at the door and not even attempt to help him? What a sad response.

Thai people are generally some of the kindest most helpful people in the world. Anyone who lives in Thailand and somehow seems to hate and want to blame the Thais in most every confrontational situation might want to reconsider why they are in Thailand.

Wow. What a lowlife creep. America has a bad enough name already, around the world, due to the toxic clown and his policies. Now this? Two peas in a pod. Maybe he can get a job within the Trump administration, he seems well qualified.

I’m not sure how this connects to Trump or any administration, this situation is about an individual’s behavior not politics.

I get it that sometimes it feels like we’re so used to viewing everything through a political lens that we end up forcing connections that aren’t really there.

However, not every bad action reflects a broader political issue or a specific leader—it can just be one person making a poor decision.

We’d probably have a more productive discussions if we focused on the actual topics instead of pulling in unrelated political angles all the time!

Mate , you've obviously never run a business because your comment shows that you haven't. Any business that provides goods or services has to get paid for such. Tne very nieve manager of that dental clinic obviously has no business acumen. If she doesn't collect the fees from her customers then how can she pay her overheads.. rent power bill etc. and what about staff. So at the end of the month she has to tell her staff sorry everybody but you get no pay because none of our customers paid. Also , there are numerous dentists in Pattaya and I wonder how many others he tried out before he went to Miss Dumbs***s free clinic.

I was a building contractor for nearly 40 years. During that time there were trouble calls that I did not charge for because it was a simple fix. Guess what? I got tons of referrals from these acts of kindness.

My mechanic has done the same for me.
