Foreign Tourists Arrested for Spraying Police With Water in Patong

Police in Patong, Phuket, arrested a group of foreign tourists after they used water guns to spray officers on duty during Songkran celebrations, an act seen as going beyond festive behaviour and posing a risk of injury.

Get today's headlines by email image.png

The incident came to light on 14 April 2026 after videos circulated widely on social media. The footage showed officers from Patong Police Station attempting to carry out their duties at a coordination tent in Patong municipality when they were targeted by dozens of tourists on 13 April 2026.

In the first clips, a large group of foreign tourists are seen repeatedly firing high-pressure water guns at police officers stationed at the Songkran festival site. Officers are forced to run for cover to avoid potential harm.

A second clip, filmed from inside a vehicle, captures another angle of the same group surrounding and spraying the officers. The intensity and coordinated nature of the water spraying suggested deliberate targeting rather than typical festival play.

A third clip shows police officers pursuing and arresting those involved. The suspects were subsequently taken into custody at Patong Police Station for legal proceedings.

Authorities indicated the actions exceeded acceptable Songkran conduct and could have caused injury to officers performing official duties. The behaviour was described as intentional and disruptive, particularly given the number of individuals involved.

The incident has raised concerns about maintaining safety and order during large-scale festival events, especially in major tourist destinations like Patong. ThaiRath reported that police are expected to proceed with legal action against those detained, while continuing to monitor festival activities to ensure public safety throughout the remaining Songkran period.

Very bad image the Thai police are giving of thailand and thai police are sending the message that foreigners are not safe from police racketing.

Bull fecking <deleted> , i wager the bloody foreigners were filming it all for Tik Tok or YouTube and Instagram showing the world that they can blast the Thai police with water cannons. The police should check each individuals social media platforms and view what ever recording devices they had on them at the time , whether that be mobile,GoPro etc and then fine and deport them.

The tourists should behave, but the RTP should also not be so xenophobic. It is always a 2 sided situation. The charges for tourists are a bit ridiculous, it wasbonly water, but the tourists should be fined with a huge fine. However Songkran is too long. This year even 5/6 days and you can expect problems

only water , you do realise that at high pressure water can cut through steel like a hot knife through butter , why do you think the authorities in over seas countries use water cannons to disperse people in protest marches , after all it is only water

Too many tourists - especially younger ones - enjoy too much freedom, they are spoiled, next think they can do anything.
This Songkran behavior, racing on big bikes, violating traffic rules.

They pick the one black guy in the crowd of white morons. That's going to get universally condemned in the West. But the selection of "perps" to take down is not surprising in the least.

You are claiming bias in the arrest. He was caught because he could not run away. His physique provides an explanation. Patong police have already stated that 7 French nationals were arrested, and he was one of them. I don't believe the person you are singling out will identify as "black". That's your personal bias.

I don't know if you know the difference between a watercanon and a water pistol like these... Ever used one?? Come on besides that The RTP is using chemicals in Thailand in the water to disperse people.. So this is nothing

High pressure water alone can not cut through steel it needs to have some sort of abrasive material like "garnet" for example, mixed in with it,

I doubt that this potential for cutting steel figured highly in the decision making process when any "authorities in overseas countries" were deciding which crowd control system they were going to use

Very bad image for tourist safety in Thailand, if tourists are getting arrested during a festival where it is common to do so. Had it been a Thai, would they have arrested them ?

But some seniors are blaming the RTP.

I feel its not a "young" thing...

Just been for my daily run in Bangsaen, and it's the first official day of 'Wan Lai' Songkran in this area. Lots of trucks filled with laughing kids with water guns and huge barrels of iced water, people walking the streets with water guns, official water refueling points set up by the Tessabahn, Police on patrol to check that the trucks stick to the designated routes, live music, sand castle competition. And almost zero foreign tourists, with no North Africans.

And guess what, not only did nobody spray the police, I completed my 5 k run without being sprayed once.

(The one time I'd appreciate a cold water soaking and I didn't get it.😀)

I'll be out later in Songkran shirt with a water gun, and I'll get soaked, but the Thai revellers can see the difference between a 'combatant' and a 'civilian', and it's all good fun.

In foreign tourist areas there's some groups who see it as an opportunity to aggressively attack others, and tradition and fun are not a factor.

Yes, in some tourist areas there's a PR stunt by the Police where an officer with a water gun joins in the fun, but tourists with any common sense can see the difference between this and an officer on duty.

Low IQ, spoilt, foreigners are the problem in Phuket.

Yes I do, was on Sukhumvit Soi 8 and Soi 4 last night.

What, if anything, is your point?

If you live in Hua Hin is that significant as to your opinion?

Is Songkran different there?

You missed my point, many thai cops join in the fun, all over thailand..you reference to NYPD, is naive and irrelevant.

As for Hua Hin...yes I celebrated Songkran there but have also celebrated Songkran in Phuket Pattaya, Mukdahan, Ubon, and a few other places...

I've seen at least one video of Thais dumping buckets of water and smearing powder on the faces of working Thai cops. Wonder if it would have been different here if the foreigners had just used buckets and powder?

Also, really easy: how about a big banner around the top of that shelter that stated, in no uncertain terms, that ANYBODY who wets them will be arrested?

Total <deleted>. Foreigners are the biggest a holes at Songkran. There are rules… don’t spray cops or normies going about their business and don’t be a <deleted>!

Agreed. I was at an Songkrans event at Central Udornthani. It was full of Thai kids and parents playing in the foam machine and having fun water fights. In comes a shirtless, muscle bound foreigner with a high powered water gun shooting people (myself included) in the face. He did not seem to notice that many of the parents were upset and continued spraying people. If he walked two streets down and waited a few hours, he would have been in an environment more suited to his style of "play." I think that many foreign visitors fail to understand the appropriate place and people with whom they can engage in this kind of behavior.

I enjoy Loi Krathong much better than Songkhron, so never visit Thailand for

Songkhron anymore, once was enough. Back then we all know not to spray the police.

I guess common sense is not that common anymore.

No idea why anyone would willingly get involved with Thai cops... especially like this, asking for it, very noob. You want as little to do with the gold-top cops as possible as a foreigner.
