French tourist injured at Phuket shooting range

A 28-year-old French tourist was rushed to Vachira Phuket Hospital after he was injured by a gunshot at Kathu Shooting Range in Phuket on 28 September. Kathu police are investigating the circumstances and examining evidence from the scene.

The injured man, identified only as William, was found with a head wound inside the range in Kathu subdistrict, Kathu district. Officers provided initial assistance before arranging his transfer to hospital for treatment.

Lieutenant Colonel Natthayan Suphanphong, an investigator at Kathu Police Station, was notified by the station's radio centre. She informed the station superintendent, Colonel Chalermchai Hersawat, and travelled to inspect the scene.

What range staff told police

According to the range supervisor, William bought 10 rounds of ammunition before entering the range to use a firearm on targets. The supervisor said he fired about four or five rounds at targets before raising the firearm to his head and firing once, leaving him injured.

Police said their inquiry remains at an early stage. Officers are checking the full details of the case, including witness accounts and other relevant evidence, before taking further action under standard procedures.

What this means for Phuket visitors

Visitors using any shooting range should follow staff instructions at all times and leave the firing area if they feel unsafe or distressed. Anyone concerned about a travelling companion should alert venue staff immediately rather than attempt to handle an emergency alone.

If you or anyone you know is in emotional distress, please contact the Samaritans of Thailand 24-hour hotline: 02 713 6791 (English), 02 713 6793 (Thai) or the Thai Mental Health Hotline at 1323 (Thai). Please also contact your friends or relatives at this time if you have feelings of loneliness, stress or depression. Seek help.

A local woman in the North went to a driving range to end her life.

She was successful. It happens.

Gun range suicides became frequent enough in Pattaya during the 'teen years that a lot of new gun range supervision regulations were put into place. For instance, unknown customers could not be left alone to shoot. I'm sure enforcement has faded with time.

No one knows what was going on inside that person's head before they took their own life. Firing 4 shots before the final one might show they were still on the edge, and not sure. People with guns who are out to kill themselves don't need to go to a range. It said he bought the ammo there but nothing about renting a gun so it would be his. If he didn't have any ammo beforehand he might have went there specifically to end his life, but why the 4 prior shots? No telling now.

Agree about suicide but in the article it’s mentioned he was taken by ambulance to a hospital and doesn’t mentioned him passing unless I missed something

It’s tragic though that he did seem to attempt it. Hope he recovers 🙏

Oops! Yes, that's a good thing, as he now has another chance.

I think it's unimportant whether he rented the gun or it was his own.

He committed suicide. Or tried to. Surviving is not the best option.

Sad to do it in young age

When he wakes up, two possibilities:

1) He sees that he has been given a second chance at life, by god or by fate.

2) He blames himself for screwing up once again, which adds to his distress.

Surely there must be cc tv inside the range? That would provide conclusive proof of what happened.

That doesn't need videos... it was a suicide attempt...

I assume you never met people after they survived a shot wound in the head. I did. Can't call it a life. And if someone wants to commit suicide he/she should have the right to do. With the gun if you know how to do (a lot of splattered blood), otherwise by medication, assisted by a friend/partner.

I've know a few who hit their heads in motorcycle accidents. My ex's brother here is one. Yes, it can be a hard life is certain areas of the brain are damaged, as he suffered. others are doing fine. Having a second chance, like this one has, can have him getting that help and realizing there is a tomorrow that might be better.

Shooting ranges should refuse solo walk-in customers. An instructor standing nearby usually isn't going to be able to stop someone shooting themself.

Requiring visitors to come with at least one other person would act as a deterrent for a suicidal person.

No, it would not be his gun. The ranges provide the gun and the customer buys a package (at exorbitant prices) of 5-10 rounds of ammunition + a target.

Yes, unless he had it illegally. I figured it was rented after posting that, along with the ammo purchase.

I have been to gun ranges a couple of times with friends in Thailand. We could choose a gun from a wide range of choice and had to buy the ammo.

I saw Thais that came regularly with their own gun. But if a farang would come up with his own (illegal) gun !? I think that would ring some bells and the police would be called.

The (military) people running the gun range were very responsible people. To my knowledge.

I just wanted to shoot some legendary guns like a Glock and Colts. I used to shoot several guns when I was in the army.

Assuming that you weren’t there to witness it, you are basing your statement on a single sentence in the article that quoted a staff member. The quote may or may not be true.

I am not suggesting that someone shot this guy (although that is an albeit very faint possibility), but it could have been an accident. And an investigation might reveal any shortcomings in the safety procedures at the range.

So, you may be quite right about a suicide attempt, but you don’t know that. CCTV should confirm the facts and any contributing circumstances.

So imho, cctv videos are indeed required in respect of this case, and if they aren’t already installed, then they should be. That way incidents such as this don’t have to rely on witnesses recounting what they think happened and why.

At the very least they provide range staff with protection from accusations that safety procedures weren’t followed. Get it on tape and nobody can accuse them of anything….so long as they do actually follow the required procedures.

Yes, i thought that as soon as I posted, that the ranges would rent just like the ones I went to in Texas. I sold just about every handgun you could imagine before I moved here. A large amount of Glocks. Only owned a Smith & Wesson .357 but will get a Thompson Center for hunting when we return , along with a small .380 to carry, likely a Sig Sauer P238.

If he shot himself in the head, he would likely live with diminished intellectual and physical abilities. If the injury is severe, it would result in a horrible quality of life.

All those who have used firearms either in their jobs and in public accessible hobby shooting ranges, are aware of the many irresponsable weirdos who haunt the shooting ranges with absolutely no humility or respect towards the firearm and elementary firearm safety.
