Fuel price hike sparks panic and long queues at Pattaya petrol stations

Residents in Pattaya rushed to fuel stations late on 1 April after authorities confirmed a sharp increase in fuel prices, leading to long queues and temporary shortages across the city.

The price adjustments were approved by the Oil Fuel Fund Committee (OFC), with the largest increases affecting diesel fuels. The new rates came into effect at 05:00 on 2 April.

Sharp rise in fuel prices

Under the changes, diesel and Super Power Diesel prices rose by 3.50 baht per litre, while gasoline and gasohol increased by 1.20 baht per litre.

The announcement triggered a surge in demand as motorists sought to fill their tanks before the higher prices took effect.

Fuel stations across Pattaya became crowded within hours, with lines forming from around 20:00 and continuing late into the night.

Stations overwhelmed by demand

Reports from local media described queues stretching for long distances, with some spilling onto Sukhumvit Road.

Cars, motorcycles, buses and vans lined up at stations, while some operators arrived with containers to store fuel for immediate use.

Several stations temporarily ran out of fuel and were forced to close as demand exceeded supply.

Some residents said they left their homes late at night, including in sleepwear, to secure fuel before the price increase came into force.

Impact on transport and businesses

The rise in diesel prices has raised concerns among drivers and small business operators, particularly those in the transport and tourism sectors.

Boat operators and fishing businesses were among those queuing with containers, saying they needed fuel for daily operations rather than stockpiling.

Public transport workers also warned that rising costs could affect their livelihoods.

A local songthaew driver, Banchong Bun Sai, said higher fuel prices were making it increasingly difficult for drivers to earn a living.

He said some drivers who rent vehicles had already stopped working because they could no longer cover both rental and fuel costs.

Growing economic pressure

Drivers and business owners expressed concern that continued increases could place further strain on already tight budgets.

Diesel prices are expected to rise to more than 44 baht per litre following the latest adjustment, adding to operating costs for transport services.

Many said the increase could have wider effects on the local economy, particularly in a city heavily dependent on tourism and transport services.

Some residents called for government action to address rising fuel costs and support those most affected.

Let's call it what it is. TTT. The Trump Tehran Tax. The entire world suffers and experiences economic pain, due to one imbecile fighting a war without a plan, and without an end game.

For the many Trump supporters on this forum could you please explain how you feel right now about a 40% increase in the price of gasoline in Thailand? Is this a sacrifice you're willing to make? Does the mysterious end game somehow justify this massive level of inflation being caused by your circus clown?

Woe is America, and the world suffers the hubris and ignorance.

This war initially started with a declaration that it was about stopping Iran from achieving nuclear weapons capability.

Once that was debunked Trump quickly pivoted to regime change expecting millions of Iranians to take to the streets while he was devastating their homes factories and infrastructure. Well we all know how poorly that went, and how little the war planners knew.

Now the big mission seems to be securing the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranians have been very clever in their tactics and they have caused considerable pain to the world economy and their neighbors. Securing the strait is going to be a very difficult job. In his usual daily bluster, the boviator in chief talked about how easy it was going to be for the US Navy to escort ships through the strait. Well we know that's not going to be the case, it's actually going to be quite difficult.

Trump is likely going to choose some sort of off-ramp very soon, without having achieved any of the goals he set forth, having set Iran back decades in terms of infrastructure, and completely failing at anything in the way of democratic progress or regime change for the Iranian people.

That will be just another war that the US has lost, and will add to the tally of Zero Wars won since World War II unless you count Grenada or Panama. The US military is huge and they do have the largest defense budget of any nation, but they don't seem to accomplish very much with that trillion dollars a year that's being spent.

Just another in the hundreds upon hundreds of failures for big Don.

Maybe the increase in the fuel price will encourage some people to use a baht bus instead a car, thus reducing traffic congestion.

The baht busses hardly cover the needs of many folks who live in or around Pattaya... more just a bit of local transport and shuttling tourists about. I expect operators will be less enamored with a 10 baht earning with current diesel prices.
