Israeli Tourists Accused of Shoplifting in Phuket

A family of Israeli tourists has been accused of shoplifting at a convenience store in Phuket after staff allegedly caught adults encouraging children to conceal snack items and leave without paying.

According to store employees, the incident involved a mother handing a packet of sweets to her son and instructing him to hide it inside a bag before quickly walking out of the shop. Staff later claimed the grandmother repeated the act by giving another packet of snacks to her granddaughter while shielding the child as she quietly exited the store.

Employees said they noticed the alleged theft and confronted the family outside the shop. However, staff claimed the tourists refused to return the items when challenged. The situation reportedly escalated when workers warned they would contact police. According to witnesses, members of the family responded in English with the phrase: “I don’t care.”

The allegation comes amid increased scrutiny of foreign tourists in Phuket following several recent incidents involving visitors on the island. Thai authorities have recently signalled tougher enforcement measures against foreigners accused of breaking local laws or causing public disturbances.

The case has drawn attention online after accounts of the confrontation circulated on social media in Thai, English and Russian-language posts. Reactions have focused on the accusation that adults encouraged children to participate in the alleged theft.

Legal experts note that shoplifting offences in Thailand can result in criminal charges if complaints are formally lodged with police. Businesses may also provide CCTV footage or witness statements as evidence during investigations.

Authorities have not yet released an official statement regarding the alleged incident. It remains unclear whether the store intends to pursue legal action or whether compensation for the missing items was later offered. Phuket officials have repeatedly urged foreign visitors to respect Thai laws and local customs as tourism numbers continue to recover.

So you think they deserve the death penalty for shoplifting? Interesting.

Ben-Gvir would vote for that.

.....and from the horse's mouth..............will take generations and/or a catastrophe to change that clear cut stance.......

I've come to think it will take the disbandment of the State of Israel to effect that. Sadly, they don't deserve it. Can't live without violence, right from HaShoMer.

I'm hearing a lot of replies which could be considered antisemitic. Yeah, I know some Jews are thin-skinned but racist drivel doesn't add.

I was driving through Sausalito in our camper with our maybe 7-8 year old daughter. There was this cool store with all kinds of little things.

When we got back to the van, I found a tiny something in her hand. I told her to walk the two blocks back by herself, give the item back and apologise to the shopkeeper. Of course, I followed her from a distance.

Shopkeeper told me she had lots of shoplifting but nobody had ever come back to apologise before.

Caveat. In my 20s, my wife & I got into shoplifting. We couldn't afford Roquefort or record albums. But what she got caught for, and arrested, was vitamins for pregnancy.

Judge let her off with a stern warning. We never shoplifted again. I still have the sterling silver pig "from Uncle Tim" at Xmas: Timothy Eaton. No wonder they went out of business.

I had a similar experience as a kid when I took some kind of baseball card or bubble gum don't recall which from a local shop. My Dad discovered it at home and made me go back and apologize. That was good parenting for sure. This was the kind of old timey store where people knew your name. Very Mayberry

If they could somehow be spirited to Gaza, they could be traded for the thousands of Palestinians held indefinitely without charges under terrible conditions in torture facilities. Of course anyone freed might be rearrested for no good reason.

Sad to see a once great country wreck itself to lure in mass tourism.

Rich or not, stealing is against the law everywhere. And encouraging your children to do the same is disgusting.

Some years back I was frequenting Pinklao Mall in Bkk. There was a family of four, the adults in their 30s and two kids around 8 to 10. They were definitely from the Middle East (or what the news in Malaysia would call Western Asia). They were always dressed up, the guy in a suit and tie and the woman in a dress. I caught them stealing from the shops a few times, and it was always the same ruse: the kids get their pockets and the insides of their jackets stuffed (I once saw them cram a loaf of bread inside a kid's jacket, and it was pretty obvious), then all four rush the checkout counter with a cheap item and a lot of loud talk (English) about how they are in a terrible hurry and please just this small item etc. I saw this at least three times, none of the clerks seem to catch on, and seemed they were just pleased to get them out of the shop. I would think a manager would step in if he saw it happen, and DEFINITELY a proprietor would make a stand.

Contrary to all the conventional wisdom deposited on AN, Israel is also home to Muslims, various Christian sects (some of which pre-date the church of Rome) and more than one sect of Judaism.

It's a cultural thing. In some countries shoplifting, and other minor theft, isn't really considered a crime. Here the social norms are totally different. For example, shoes are left outside of temples, stuff is left hanging on motorbikes, doors are left open, etc., it's a society based on trust, at least where minor stuff is concerned. This worked when when nearly all tourists were of a certain ilk.

Jewish Israelis wouldn't speak Arabic to each other

I'm sure they wouldn't but, then, no one claimed that they would. However, you claimed that "Israelis speak Hebrew", suggesting that all Israelis speak Hebrew when, in fact, approximately 20% of the Israeli population are Arabs with Israeli citizenship i.e. they are Israelis who speak Arabic.

Posters want to bash Jews .

If the people in the video are Arabs, they will get a free pass .

My point was it sounded like they are speaking Arabic , so they wouldn't be Jews

The shoplifting is reprehensible but trivial. The real story is that Thais are fed up with the behaviour of Israeli tourists in general. They are also fed up with their illegal businesses and land ownership.

In Western countries Israel has very powerful political lobbies that have influence or even control over governments. Such as the US, UK, Australia and some European countries. Any criticism of Israel or Israelis in the West is immediately branded as antisemitism which can even see politicians like Jeremy Corbyn hounded from office (by the Epsteinite Petie Mandelson) and replaced by the pro-Israel Kier Starmer.

in Thailand there isn’t a strong Israel lobby. So Thais can say what they like about Israelis without fear of being branded as antisemites. In fact the vast majority of Thais have no idea what is Judaism is the Jewish race. So they can’t hate something they don’t even know exists. They just react to what they see in front of their eyes which is obnoxious behaviour by arrogant tourists and flagrant violation of laws intended to protect rights of Thais.

Malaysia and Indonesia don’t have problems with Israeli tourists because they don’t let them in and there is no backlash from their tourism industries demanded that Israelis should be admitted. Perhaps Thailand should take a leaf from the books of their ASEAN neighbours and which would remove these problems and clean up the illegal businesses in Koh Phangnan, Samui etc in one fell swoop. A half way house would be to discontinue visa free entry.
