Lad Phrao fire death toll rises to 34

A further victim of the fire at Lat Phrao has died, bringing the confirmed death toll to 34, Bangkok officials said on 19 July 2026.

The blaze broke out shortly before midnight on 12 July 2026 and caused a large number of casualties. Authorities said all 34 people who died had been formally identified.

The Chatuchak District Office reported that seven people from the most seriously injured, or red-category, group have now died, including the latest victim.

Seventy people recorded as injured

Authorities listed 70 people as injured by the fire. Thirteen remain in the red category for critical injuries, while nine are classified as yellow-category patients with moderate injuries.

A further 48 people sustained minor injuries and were placed in the green category. All green-category patients have since returned home, according to the district office.

Police have questioned 126 witnesses

Police Major General Kiatikul Sontanaen, commander of Metropolitan Police Division 2, said investigators from Phahonyothin Police Station had questioned 126 witnesses so far.

Those interviewed include injured people, restaurant employees and relatives of the dead.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established. Police are still coordinating to obtain the results of forensic examinations and expect to receive them soon, Kiatikul said.

"... The cause of the fire has not yet been established..."

But, surely there is plenty of documentary evidence already available to rule things out of consideration?

A venue licensed as a “restaurant” but producing a 34‑fatality fire should have had clear, routine compliance evidence of electrical safety inspections, LPG records, fire safety certifications, occupancy permits, and proof it was operating within its approved category.

If those records are missing, falsified, or show the venue was actually functioning as a nightlife space, that’s not a paperwork glitch, it’s grounds for criminal charges.

One would hope that, even under Thai law, the absence of required documentation is itself a violation, and operating outside approved use is a separate offence.

So investigators should already be able to rule out certain causes, and if they can’t, that points to regulatory breaches long before the fire started.
