Police Arrest Karaoke Owner, For Using Underage Girls

Police from the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division (ATPD) arrested a 20-year-old karaoke shop owner in Yasothon province on 30 May 2026 following an investigation into the exploitation of underage girls for commercial sex. The suspect, identified as Miss Kochakorn, was taken into custody at her venue in Huay Kaeng subdistrict, Kutchum district.

Officers acted on an arrest warrant charging her with human trafficking for the unlawful exploitation of prostitution involving a person over 15 but under 18 years of age and for arranging commercial sex between sex workers and clients.

The operation was led by ATPD Commander Maj Gen Witthaya Sriprasertphap, who ordered officers from Police Station 3, ATPD, alongside social development and human security officials from Yasothon province, to apprehend the suspect.

Investigators had discovered that the karaoke shop was employing girls under 18 as staff and secretly allowing them to take on prostitution work with customers. The underage girls were required to share income from sexual services with the shop owner in exchange for permission to leave the premises with clients.

Officers rescued three female victims from human trafficking: a 15-year-old, a 16-year-old found at a hotel in the area, and a 17-year-old who was inside the karaoke shop sitting, talking, and drinking with a customer at the time of the raid.

Thaitabloid reported that Ffollowing the arrests, the three underage girls were referred to social development officials for victim identification and protection. They have since been sent to a children’s shelter in Yasothon province for welfare safeguarding and psychological rehabilitation.

Okay. Are we certain these girls wanted to be "rescued"? We just look at age numbers, we don't look at each individual story, the important part.

Were these girls "tricked" into prostitution or did they choose it, and why?

When they give these lowlifes a mandatory 20 year prison sentence without parole for first offense the others might think before using these girls, and boys, in this manner.

The lowlife is a 20 year old, which is barely legal in Thailand. Best to leave this to the Thais to deal with. Their culture, their rules.

Just like the farang 'bar owners' who aren't really pim ps.

Not forcing or coercing. Teen girls like sex and love money. Some learned to mix the two. No foreigners would even know the place existed.

Couple of decades ago when I first got to Thailand and got my first teaching job I went to a club one night with some other teachers. I pointed out a girl on stage doing the dance routine stuff saying "She's fkn gorgeous". One of my fellow teachers said "She's one of your students". I was teaching upper high school classes.

I was traveling the Mekong in the 80s and stopped in Mukdahan for the night. Next door to the hotel was a completely dark as night restaurant. Even the waiters didn't use flashlights. But there was a thin line of line, maybe as thick as a pencil. I had to peer in and there were lots of teenagers.

I spent time living in a brothel in Ubon and a couple of the girls gave me their school photos.

All this is not unusual even today.

It was a different era. Brokers cruised through Northern and Isaan villages, promising parents a good job waitressing or being a maid. Maybe the girl was worth B30k. Everybody knew, even the parents. I don't think that happens much today, at least in Thailand, because of face.

Neighbouring countries: Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, 100% still happening. Now that's trafficking and sad for all concerned.

It's interesting that none of the prostitutes, from high to low, ever come from the South. Only North, Northeast, Central North. Wonder why that is.

If they enforced the rules better, more would be in jail, and more girls and boys would return to their homes safer. When the filth of society is put into a place where they can't hurt others, then the decent will have better lives. It has nothing to do with culture using and selling people, but of right and wrong. Some people bend the rules to suit them.

The culture isn't as binary in their views of right and wrong. It's rare to hear a Thai being openly judgemental. The ones I know take into account all kinds of things that hadn't crossed my mind. They understand much better than I ever will the pressure on girls to take care of their family. The sentences the adults receive will indicate the Thai view of the situation.

They might understand the pressure but not care about it. Boys here are spoiled, which is why so many get away with so much, including supporting the children many make. The culture looks at women as secondary, which sets their thinking. Also hard to be judgemental when a people are suppressed in some ways.

Maybe a fair question in context of Thailand, but the international age for trafficking for sexual exploitation is 18 - and anything below that age, regardless of willing or not, is a crime.

Thank God these girls were rescued, now they can continue having sex with school boys for free.

Maturity is part of it.

Even if an underage girl chooses it, is she mature enough psychologically to make the decision? Probably not at 15. Maybe some girls are not psychologically mature enough at 22 either, but they need to make an arbitrary cutoff.

Have you ever considered what their homes must be like? If they had a stable home, do you think they would have turned to this life?

Arbitrary ages don't match emotional maturity, it's individual. And many girls just need an income. Do you know how much 7-11 pays???

Personally, I don't think an arbitrary age decided by old coot pols is relevant, it's individual.

What age do high school kids start having sex? 13 these days.

Ideally, parents should be supporting their children, at least partially.

Sorry, we'll just have to agree to disagree. There is such a think as lack of psychological maturity and selling your body for a living is a major life decision.

A stable, loving father figure is how most children grow up independent enough to not go south. Even if they wander because of peer pressure, they'll usually come back to what they grew up seeing. Some weirdo parents actually send their daughters to work the trade for their own selfish motives.

The brain isn't fully developed until the mid 20's, and irrational decisions are much more likely to be made in teen years. This is why waiting as long as possible doesn't end up with being used, unwanted pregnancies, STD's and abusive boyfriends that aren't mature enough themselves to help raise children.

Anyone granting the age of consent at 15 is predator minded. Very easy to manipulate girls that young, and they know it.

No one in their right mind chooses prostitution. They're mostly coming from abusive and or molested backgrounds, along with trafficking, addictions and parents forcing them for their own needs. The ones who benefit from these young girls are disturbed pedophiles, who can't get a normal girl so resort to the trade, those easily manipulated.

The average age is 16-18 globally. In Thailand it's 15-18. Those from poverty might start earlier, especially if their parents talk them into it, or they're victims of abuse in their own families.

No, there are limited high paying jobs and no welfare system.

And also generational poverty / debt, having to support parents.

That's a major reason there are so many more prostitutes in developing countries.

People who constantly bash prostitution and wish it were illegal and just goes away do not have a good understanding of socioeconomic problems.

Age of Consent in Europe, first world countries, lies between 14-18 - most are 14. They have decided that a girl at those ages are mature enough to make their own decisions - that said, it doesn’t mean every 14 year old girl is going to run out on her birthday and have sex with someone. 18 years old is an archaic rule, my mother got married when she was 14 back in the early days of America, had her first child at 15, and no one went to jail. Peace

Not at all, the age of consent in America and its Territories is 18, they broke Federal laws and should be prosecuted……all of them……guess we’ll see what happens to the rest. It has been said many times those girls knew exactly what they were recruited for - I mean who honestly thought they would be paid tens of thousands of Dollars to give back rubs, free flights to exotic countries, room and board in 5 Star hotels and Double Diamond Resorts?? Not a damned one of them. Peace

True there aren't so many high paying jobs in Thailand but there are many jobs. Less than 1% of the female population 16-40 here are prostitutes. Subtract those who are trafficked, coerced and forced into the trade you have less. The other 99% of females of that age are working regular jobs or living home taking care of children. Yes, there are more prostitutes in poorer countries but the reasons are much the same most are in the trade. They don't have to join the trade to survive. When girls go to large cities, they have to support themselves with housing and food. They could live home and work locally and still survive like the other millions do. It's used as an excuse for the poverty yes, but there are alternatives. What would these women do if prostitution was illegal and enforced? Those who think it's okay are the ones benefiting from it.

In every US state, child marriage is legal in specific circumstances. In 25 US states, girls of any age are allowed to marry in certain circumstances, while others have minimum ages as low as 13. In the UK, 16-year-olds can get married with parental consent, and 16-year-olds in Scotland can get married without it.

Those are the official stats?

They seem suspiciously low to me.

Fun fact: Jesus quote on prostitutes in the Bible

The one and only statement Jesus explicitly made regarding prostitutes was in response to a question posed by the chief priests and the elders. He said, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you.” (Mt 21:31).

Does any country still have 18 as the age of consent? I doubt it.

However, most, if not all, countries have laws preventing prostitution if under the age of 18. Sex cannot be consented to if it is transactional.
