Rayong evacuates residents after Khao Chuk spillway crack

Authorities in Rayong are moving residents from low-lying areas after part of the spillway at Khao Chuk Reservoir in Khao Chamao district subsided and developed a large crack on Monday 28 September 2026.

The damage reportedly allowed a substantial volume of water to flow downstream. Officials have urged people in downstream communities to follow evacuation instructions and official warnings closely as work continues to reduce the reservoir level.

The Royal Irrigation Department said the main dam and the wider spillway structure remain stable. Its crews are releasing water from the reservoir, while reinforcing the damaged and eroded section.

Evacuation centres named for at-risk communities

Thung Khwai Kin Subdistrict Administrative Organisation in Klaeng district issued an urgent warning on 28 September 2026, saying the Klong Raok Reservoir, also known as Khao Chuk Dam, was at risk after a wall crack and spillway damage.

Residents close to the reservoir were told to leave immediately and move valuables to higher ground.

Three evacuation locations have been identified: Wat Chumchon Sung, Chamnansamakki Witthaya School and Wat Noen Somboon.

The areas specifically highlighted for concern include Thung Khwai Kin, Kong Din and Klong Pun, as water from the upper catchment moves towards lower-lying land. Low-lying areas around Nam Pen subdistrict in Khao Chamao were also told to prepare to relocate belongings.

Water from two reservoirs under watch

Officials said water from two key reservoirs in the upper area could combine downstream. Prasae Reservoir, described as the main reservoir where the water situation is critical and where releases are being accelerated, could affect Krasae Bon, Ban Na and Thang Kwian.

Klong Raok Reservoir is near Khao Chamao-Khao Wong National Park. While the damaged point is not at the face of the main dam, it is on the route water would take towards communities below, according to the local warning.

Residents downstream, including farmers, have been asked to prepare for rising water and keep track of further announcements.
