Sa Kaeo checkpoints tightened in Russian disappearance hunt

Police and military units have intensified checkpoints across Sa Kaeo province as they search for two Thai men suspected in a case involving the disappearance of a Russian national in Chonburi.

Authorities fear the pair may try to leave Thailand through an eastern border area. The operation was stepped up on 31 July after the suspects previously fled a checkpoint in Chanthaburi on a motorcycle.

Motorcycle reportedly broke through Chanthaburi checkpoint

Investigators said the two suspects rode through a checkpoint at Khao Laem in Soi Dao district, Chanthaburi, at about 1.30pm on 30 July 2026. They then left the area quickly.

Police believe they may have been travelling towards the north-east in search of a route out of Thailand across the Thai-Lao border. The disappearance case is being handled by Huai Yai Police Station in Chonburi.

The 191 emergency centre has alerted police stations nationwide, particularly those in eastern provinces and along border areas. Officers have been instructed to increase surveillance, establish checkpoints and vehicle stops, and search suspicious vehicles around the clock.

Sa Kaeo border routes under closer watch

In Sa Kaeo, provincial police have joined Burapha Force, military units, local officials and volunteers to set up checkpoints and interception points in areas considered vulnerable.

The tighter controls focus particularly on the border districts of Aranyaprathet and Khok Sung, as well as connecting border routes. Officers are also monitoring natural crossings, secondary roads and other areas that could potentially be used to evade checks.

Police stations in Wang Sombun, Wang Nam Yen, Khao Chakan, Mueang Sa Kaeo, Watthana Nakhon, Nong Mak Fai, Khok Sung, Ban Thap Thai and Ta Phraya have been told to coordinate with security agencies, community leaders and local volunteers.

Authorities said the operation is a proactive attempt to block every possible escape route and that they are seeking to arrest the suspects as quickly as possible.

Members of the public who see people or a motorcycle matching information released by police, or notice suspicious activity, have been asked to contact local police or call 191. Officials warned people not to confront or attempt to detain the suspects themselves.
