A 63-year-old Swedish man has died after he was found with unexplained bruising and wounds at a hotel in the Bang Tao area of Phuket.
Cherng Talay Police are investigating the circumstances of his death, including his movements and condition before he was taken to hospital. No official cause of death has yet been announced.
Found injured on two consecutive days
Hotel staff at the property in Cherng Talay first found the man lying face-down on September 17. He was conscious and able to speak at the time, but staff noticed bruising on his body.
He was offered medical treatment but declined. The man also did not explain how he had received his injuries.
At about 10.35am the following day, September 18, a housekeeper found him face-down again, this time near a bathroom. His condition had worsened and he was reportedly suffering convulsions, leading hotel staff to call for medical assistance.
He was taken to Thalang Hospital, where his condition later deteriorated. He died at around 9.45pm that evening.
Post-mortem examination
Police and medical staff carried out an initial examination and found wounds and bruising on the man's body. However, they could not immediately establish the cause of death.
His body was subsequently transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital for a detailed post-mortem examination.
Police have not said whether foul play is suspected. Officers are also coordinating with the Swedish Embassy and immigration officials while the investigation continues.
The man's identity has not been released while authorities await confirmation that his relatives have been informed.
