Thai hotel wedding disrupts British woman's three-day stay

A British woman has described how a three-day wedding at a five-star hotel in Thailand disrupted what she had expected to be a peaceful break after a long flight.

Angela Epstein, from Manchester, said she and her husband arrived to blue skies, spacious rooms and sea views, but soon discovered that a large destination wedding was under way. The celebration included lawn games, an MC using a loudspeaker and, later, drunk guests and a DJ set.

She said the noise began while they were at breakfast on their first day, with a "relentlessly chirpy" master of ceremonies calling out: "Are you having FUN?"

A wedding guests had not expected

Epstein said hotel management sent a letter advising that a wedding was taking place and that some areas could be unavailable. It ended with the message: "thank you for your understanding".

She argued that guests should be warned before booking when a wedding or private event is likely to dominate a hotel stay, particularly after they have travelled long distances and have little practical option to move elsewhere.

Destination weddings have become increasingly popular, including in Thai beach and resort locations. For foreign visitors and expats planning a quiet staycation, the issue is worth considering before paying a non-refundable rate.

Hotels may list the possibility of on-site events in their terms and conditions, but guests can also contact the property directly before booking. Asking whether any weddings, corporate functions or exclusive-use events are scheduled during the stay can provide a clearer answer than relying on a general booking description.

What guests can ask for

Epstein said she complained immediately and requested a remedy. In her case, the Thai hotel removed charges for all extras during the wedding period, including lunches, dinners, drinks and a spa treatment.

She said, however, that she would have preferred quiet rather than compensation.

For Thailand-bound travellers, the practical lesson is to seek written confirmation of planned events, especially at smaller beach resorts or properties promoted as wedding venues.

Nothing says relaxing holiday like a bloke with a microphone asking if you’re having FUN every 30 seconds. 😂
