Tourist Uses Thai Rider to Pass Phuket Checkpoint

A video has surfaced of a foreign tourist in Phuket paying a Thai food delivery rider to drive his rental motorcycle through a police checkpoint. The incident, which occurred outside a convenience store on Siriraj Road in Patong, quickly gained online traction after being posted on social media by the rider and subsequently shared by the Shadow Phuket Facebook page.

In the video, the tourist uses a translation app to request the rider's help. Agreeing, the Thai rider, donning his ride-hailing jacket, navigates the checkpoint with the tourist's wife onboard. The move raised eyebrows and questions about the tourist's motives, sparking speculation that he might lack a valid driving license or be avoiding detection due to potential alcohol consumption or other illicit reasons.

Social media erupted with discussions on the incident, with some users criticizing the rider's decision to participate in the favor, citing potential legal repercussions if contraband had been involved. Discussions on Shadow Phuket’s page also suggest concerns over the delivery rider's safety and legality of the situation, should prohibited items have been on the motorcycle.

Police authorities have yet to comment on the situation or clarify if they plan to investigate. The incident underscores the complexities of tourist interactions and local assistance in Phuket, where illegal activities or misunderstandings can quickly become viral controversies.

Isn't this service called - "You Drink I Drive" ??

*on Grab "driver for your car"... (though not sure if its available for Motorcycles).

I know in this case the Grab driver is used purely to circumnavigate police detection - however, there is an certain element of 'Mr Bean Genius' to this - though riding drunk in the first place is extremely idiotic.

150 baht and a pair of firm, young teats pressed up against him. Not a bad deal.

My neighbour often got a WIN driver to ride his bike home and another to follow to bring him back into town.

The thai fellow is also aiding and abetting. Both should be looked at in this instance.

More likely to do with the fact he and his wife do not appear to be wearing helmets.

The new 30 days visa laws will eradicate all these problems with lawless farangs.

Is there any proof he was drunk or didn’t have a licence? I couldn’t make out what was said, but visually there was nothing to suggest either.

There obviously was A reason and no helmets is certainly likely as I didn’t see any in the video.

Whether the other two are supporting reasons probably shouldn’t be assumed to be the case, since there isn’t visually any evidence either way. Perhaps audibly the grab rider says the farang told him so, but I can’t make that out.

Questions upon questions. That creates headaches, but what's the point?

I doubt very much that the police will bother to comment, let alone investigate. All based on speculation. Responding may open up a hornet's nest - allegations that cannot be proven in court. Think of all the whack jobs reporting baseless crimes. My neighbor put up dark blinds on his windows, I think he's using the "block the sun" excuse to cover up his illegal activities. Two weeks ago i saw two young women enter his house, I'm sure he is a pedophile. I know what a pedophile looks like.

When I drove a taxi in the 1970s,we had what was called a "Glow Service" I have no idea why it was called that but a bartender would call when he had a drunk regular. Our dispatcher would send two taxis. One driver would park his taxi and drive the drunk and his car to his home with the other taxi following, who would then deliver the first driver back to his taxi. The drunk was usually only charged double the normal fare...not a bad deal, really.

I'm not so sure - perhaps something lost in translation.

A) He was riding while pishedup and saw the check-point up ahead - and had the idea to pull over hire the GrabRider to avoid getting caught - in which case, yes laws were broken.

B) He'd had a few - and called the GrabRider because he didn't want to ride - no laws broken.

I've done this before - I've been out with the car, met a mate - then fancied a beer, but I was stuck with the car.

Options - leave the car over night and pick it up the next day, or call Grab to drive my car home for me (which was probably double the cost of a taxi) - exactly the same as the "Glow Service" explained by stuttering Dave.

The issue now is that insurance coverage for EV's insist on named drivers - so I'm not sure how the Grab Insurance covers this.

Come on... You held back your usual bias....

Don't you mean "the drug impaired, drunk, unlicensed, criminal record holding, overstaying scum farang, continued to place countless innocent Thai lives at risk"....

Gov min on my EV works for any driver, licensed or not.

I should have been more clear to avoid the lowest denominator respoins.

1st Class insurance for EV's requires Named drivers.

If I had a Neta I wouldn't bother getting 1st Class insurance either - Por-ror-bor is fine as there's not much to insure.

They have that service in Japan. You call a guy comes out and drive you and your car home.

The guy that we used had a foldable electric bike he showed up on.

So instead of getting fined by the BIBs for not having the right kind of license, he pays the kid 150thb and says, "meet you on the corner up there", crosses to the other side walks up to said corner.

Not sure of the problem here, it's Thailand. Seems both came out good on the deal, and no, the cops aren't going to investigate this, it's a nothing-burger.
