Planning a trip to Hokkaido in September or October. When is the best time to enjoy the Autumn colours?

I was there many years ago. Aim for late Sept., but get a 2nd opinion. It has been a long time. If you are American, Hokkaido is about the same latitude as Oregon.

Around mid or end of Oct., but sometimes snows earlier than expected. Then it would be late to see the colors. 

If you take ShinKanSen, you will enjoy change of color province to province from Tokyo to end of Honshu. 

Don't miss fresh tuna sashimi around fishermen towns.

Perhaps I will be there next year for 7th time.

Thank you for the replies. I am now going on 19 September so may be a bit too early for the Autumn colours. Only four nights. So one night in Sounkyo, two in Shiretoko, last night near Chitose for the flight home. All by rented car.
