BERLIN (Reuters) - Germans are far more satisfied with the direction of their country and less politically polarised than other European nations, a survey showed on Wednesday, underscoring why Angela Merkel is expected to win a new term as chancellor this month.

The survey by the Bertelsmann Foundation showed that 59 percent of Germans believe their country is headed in the right direction.

Some 77 percent say their personal economic situation has improved or stayed the same over the past two years, while 80 percent describe themselves as political centrists.

The results contrast with other European countries where dissatisfaction with the economy and political establishment has led to a surge in support for populist parties on the right and left in recent years.

By contrast, German voters seem keen for continuity. Merkel is widely expected to win a record-tying fourth term on Sept. 24, with polls showing her centre-right bloc 13-15 percentage points ahead of its closest rival, the Social Democrats (SPD).

"These findings point to a highly content and status quo oriented German society and contrast starkly with the situation elsewhere in Europe," the authors Catherine de Vries and Isabell Hoffmann said.

In Italy, for example, just 13 percent of respondents said they were satisfied with the direction of their country. In France and Britain, satisfaction levels stood at 36 and 31 percent, respectively. The average satisfaction level across the 28 countries in the EU was 36 percent.

Both Germany and France showed sharp increases in satisfaction levels over the past months. In a survey conducted in March, before young centrist Emmanuel Macron was elected president, just 12 percent of French said their country was headed in the right direction. German satisfaction levels stood at 32 percent in March.

Among the big European countries, France was the most politically polarised, with just 51 percent of respondents describing themselves as centrist. Some 24 percent identified as left or extreme left, while 25 percent described themselves as right or extreme right.

In Germany, just 13 percent of respondents described themselves as left or extreme left, and only 7 percent as right or extreme right.

The Bertelsmann survey was conducted in July and based on interviews with 10,755 Europeans in all EU member states.

And by most objective measures, they've got a pretty good one in Germany.

Yep its terrible isn't it if only the UK was run as poorly as Germany then we could be in the economic mess that the German's have found themselves in since WW2. Another nail in the coffin for all those Brexiters hoping the EU would implode once the UK left. Now in 5 years we will be able to contrast and compare which is the great fear for Brexiters.

Very well said.  Of course facts and common sense are generally not well received here... ;)

Nor, apparently, is irony.

It's a nice piece of Government PROPAGANDA in Germany !

Who ever believes just a tiny bit of it is a simple naive fool.

You know I would have just written off your comment as being based on nothing but prejudice but then I noticed that you had put "propaganda" in capital letters. So, count me as convinced.

No prejudice here.

Look at the real facts and real numbers and you might agree. You can also believe what the main stream media tells you and keep dreaming.

Germany has now 20% [15,000,000 people !] of its population living under the poverty line and more and more people who go into retirement face poverty.

That's facts !

I went to the World Socialist Web Site, which I think it's clear, is hardly likely to downplay the poverty figures, and it cited 15.7%.

https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2017/03/20/germ-m20.html

But even if it were 20 percent that does not contradict the results of that poll which said that 59 percent of germans felt the country was moving in the right direction.  Most likely few of those in poverty feel that the country is moving in the right direction. But that leaves, even by your own figures, 80 percent of the population not in poverty. Perhaps they shouldn't feel that way. Poverty is certainly  a problem in Germany.  Perhaps they should be more concerned about the plight of the poor. But just because you feel that way, that doesn't mean the majority of the German electorate shares your views.

What do the Germans know about the situation inside of their country? Maybe Germans should give angry obsessed outsiders the deciding votes.

And as proof that you really know this virtually 100% of Germans agree with you. Not only that, they will all be voting for the AfD.

Germany has a long history of allowing fools that eventually threaten the country to rule.  This person is just another example that short term policy will lead to long term catastrophe.  And pray tell, what do you do with a million uneducated layabouts with extreme religious views that inhabit all public space, train platforms, bus stations and so on. I have a friend that has returned from a holiday , mostly in Germany. In fear of my life most times he said.  So many angry,  sullen unemployed looking to be insulted. I am not going to EU ever again.

If elections would change anything they would be illegal ! [In any country !!!]

As for Germany:

The Bundesrepublik Deutschland is NOT Germany !

The Bundesrepublik Deutschland is a Trust Corporation owned by the Allies [Founded after WWII] to

suppress and exploit Germany. Make a quick search and this can be validated legally very easily and without a shadow

of a doubt.

It's a very sophisticated fraud but a fraud non the less.

This is confirmed by the Bundesverfassungsgericht [private corporation] and the Bundesregierung [private corporation]

The Bundesverfassungsgericht also confirmed the German Election Law to be against the Grundgesetz and as such

all elections since 1956 are invalid ! As the Election Law has not been modified [as there is nobody who could legally do so apart from the German People] the Elections now are invalid due to a missing Election Law.

[You can easily validate this on the homepage of the Bundesverfassungsgericht]

As such the "Elections" are a bad joke !

There is much more to this story as it all starts in 1918 !

Even the Weimar Republic was not Germany anymore ! [Easy to validate]

The German People have no idea about their own history ... and due to the re-education programme

carried out since 1945 through the Allies they don't want to know.

History is very different than most people think.

For all these so called "polls": I would not believe any of them.

Not in Germany or in any other country as they are all plain propaganda to keep the people in their ignorance of

what is really happening.

PS:

If anybody wants to call this "conspiracy": Prove me wrong !

What happened to Germany [the one from 1871] is probably the biggest crime in human history !

And I am not joking or exaggerating. Look into history and find out for yourself !!!

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof. It's incumbent on you to provide the proof.

As for being the biggest crime in human history. I think your claiim has serious competition from several parties, including the crime against humanity committed by Nazi Germany.

Actually i came across info on this scenario for the first time several months ago.  Referenced and cross checked it.  Pretty damn interesting...  truth is stranger than fiction...
