Health Ministry sets off countermeasures to influenza

BANGKOK, 6 September 2017 (NNT) – The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Health has ordered all hospitals to be on alert against influenza after seeing cases rocket to over 80,000 but assured that no new strains have been found.

Permanent Secretary for Public Health Dr Sophon Mekthon said that many Asian countries have seen an upsurge in influenza cases this year and as Thailand has been contending with rains over the past months, it has seen a jump in patients with symptoms of the flu virus.

He stated however, that most confirmed cases have been of common strains such as H1N1 and H3N2. From January to this past August, 85,290 people came down with the flu and 17 perished.

Medical facilities have been told to be aware of the ailment and to prepare needed medicine and protocols. Particular monitoring has been called for risk groups such as the elderly, chronically ill, children and pregnant women, who have all been urged to receive vaccinations if possible.

Ministry agents have been dispatched to spread knowledge on the illness and on proper healthcare.
