Abhisit rejects joint party speculation

By The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva on Wednesday rejected speculation in foreign media that there would be a merger between the Democrats and Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s party.

He said he doubted whether the premier would set up a party to run in an election.

Abhisit said the Democrats still intend to work with other parties.

However, if they win a major support, the party will push its policies by itself, meaning forming its own government, but if there was not enough support, it would then look at the possibility working with others to form a government.

When I see Thai officials vehemently deny something is going to happen, it is going to happen.

I wonder how far along in the discussions they actually are?

Haven't the Democrat Party always have to resort to joining with other parties to form the government?

Yes, in recent years they've had to join forces with the Green/Khaki Party to form government.

No govenment in Thailand has obtained an absolute majority and has alays needed the support of other parties.

Well....if you don't count that obscure and non divisive person named Thaksin you are probably right.

PS...You might want to look up the word 'landslide' and check to see if any party has had one in Thailand.

Clue .......parties sometimes have to change their names.

Thaksin is non-divisive, that's the irony post of the decade.

Maybe it's your sense of black humor.

But, if Prayuth decided to form a political party, it would most likely be called "Thai Rak Military"

With just the one exception, Thai Rak Thai won the 2005-election outright, however in every other election since 2001 the government has been formed as a coalition with minor-parties.
