BANGKOK: -- Pol Lt Col Pongporn Pramsaneh, a former National Office of Buddhism (NOB) director who has been transferred to be an inspector-general at the Prime Minister’s Office, has been re-assigned to be responsible for five southern border provinces.

Jirachai Moonthongroy, PM’s Office permanent secretary, revealed on Thursday (Sept 7) that he had signed an order to re-assign him to be responsible for Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala, Songkhla and Satun in his new capacity as an inspector-general.

He said that Surasak Riangkruea, an inspector-general, had previously been responsible for both Zone 8 ( Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala, Songkhla and Satun in the South) and Zone 16 (Chiang Rai, Nan, Phayao and Phrae provinces in the North) for over three years.

I read that he refused to go somewhere else.

Good to see the house is in order.

What does an inspector-general do? Is he like the Head guy and in charge of everyone? Thailand has so many government offices, it is hard to keep track.

Generally, they inspect things.

Typically a government inspector-general investigates internal government misconduct.

But I suspect that Jirachai will not be investigating the military or its surrogates (the defense volunteers and the paramilitary contractors).

The poisoned chalice has been passed on.

He must have upset someone important to be removed from his comfy chair at the National Office of Buddhism.

Maybe he was doing too good a job eh? Getting to close to someone so dump him in the south then blame him for the continued attacks. Another very old trick! Man, this government needs to get 'real' as they say.

I liked it when they put the chronic drunk Chalerm in charge of this strict Islamic zone. Comedy gold...hic...

Maybe this guy expanded his investigation into monks other than those aligned to Dhammakaya, which has resulted in his reassignment to the deep south.

I see this as a purely political move on the part of the Junta.

He got the position with a mandate to investigate the financial dealings of the monks and their temples. Further, he was supposed to champion a policy of financial transparency for the priesthood.

A month or so later, he is re-assigned.

Perhaps the Junta has realized that its position isn't quite as strong as it thought?

Perhaps there were a few orange-clad whispers that support might not continue?

We can only speculate...
