Heavy rains caused soil to subside two metres over a 100-metre stretch and damaging a fence at Wat Mahathat in Uttaradit’s Muang district on Friday.

As Tambon Nai Muang mayor Kampol Yoocharoenkit led officials to inspect the damage, they pitched in to help local residents temporarily move the statue of Phraya Pichai of the shattered sword from the temple’s entrance to a safer spot inside the building.

The entranceway was tilted and threatening to fall due to the subsidence. The damaged temple fence was built in 1972. The temple’s front concrete footpath also sank, prompting shops there to remove their belongings out of fear that ongoing rain could further worsen the sinking.

As repairs could not be made immediately, Kampol declared the area a danger zone. Outsiders are prohibited from entering the site, and motorists are warned to lower their speed while passing by.
