This actually happened last year but after reading a related post, I was prompted to write about it.
What happened was that I entered the Kingdom on September 24th 2016 at around 8 pm on a 30 day automatic visa from Australia.
However, in examining my passport the following day, I noticed the arrival date stamp was for the the 23rd.
Not that it made any difference as far as my travel plans were concerned but it occurred to me later that I could have robbed a bank or committed some heinous crime in Australia on the 24th and would have been able to produce the perfect alibi in that I had documented proof that I was actually in Thailand and hadn't yet left when the crime occurred.

It also occurred to me that any other tourist who had been processed by that same Immigration officer on that evening could probably have done the same thing because it was obvious that he hadn't updated his stamp from the previous shift.

Had a similar experience in Malaysia. I was on a transit stop for a few hours. Did not notice that they had the wrong YEAR on my entry stamp. Caused 2 hour office detention and questioning before I was finally able to convince them that it was the date stamp in error, not me. Only just made my connection flight.

Except photos are taken at the immigration booth when you arrive, which would render your fake alibi useless.

and assuming you arrived by plane, there is still the airline record.

Has it ever occurred to you that there might be alternate ways to enter a country, for example a land border? Like, flying to KL, Singapore, Siem Reap and than crossing by train, bus, etc.??

Hence the use of "assuming".

Note to self: Next time you plan to rob a bank fly immediately to Thailand afterwards. Oh scratch that I am already here.

Sadly, it seems not uncommon. A few weeks ago I arrived at the desk at Suvarnabhumi at about 10 minutes to midnight, and stood there for ages while the IO stared dumbly at my passport, flipping some of the pages backward and forward. At one stage he tried to attract the attention of his colleague in the booth, who completely blanked him - obviously not a popular member of the team. Eventually he plonked my passport on the shelf in front of me jabbing at the single re-entry permit issued at Maptaphut a few weeks before, and said "You use already," also indicating the entry stamp at the top of the same page, next to the departure stamp from a couple of weeks previously. I pointed out to him the date on that entry stamp, which was for July last year, and last year's re-entry permit at the bottom of the facing page.

A look of bewilderment came over his face, and he took the passport back onto his desk and made a great show of examining it further for several minutes, presumably trying to save face. Then he stamped it, but quickly realised that it was now several minutes past midnight, so he crossed out the figure and wrote in the new one (on the TM6 as well). The "permitted to stay" date is also virtually illegible, so I have an entry stamp which looks like a complete abortion.

I think as well as being stupid, he was probably drunk. What a kn0b.

You really have to check dates on these stamps.

The year before last when I renewed my extension I also obtained a re-entry permit.

The  IO used the same stamp as the date of the application, as the date the re-entry permit was valid until.

It took a minute for him to realise his error even when I pointed it out.

I just had an IO incorrectly stamp my ME "O" visa as "Used".
She immediately realized the error and corrected the mistake by crossing out the incorrect stamping and signing the correction.
I hope this does not cause a future problem with a less perceptive IO who might think I had done the crossing out in order to buffalo immigration. :sleepy::sleepy:

In my case, Immigration stamped my multiple entry stamp as 25th jan 2016 instead of 2017. Immigration on my re-entry into Thailand delayed things but were very nice about it and advised me to have it changed, which I did.

People only go to Australia by by boat but do not leave

The boats are usually made from wood and the occupants  manage to loose all forms of identification during the voyage

If you are lucky after a couple of years the government will pay you monetary compensation for having the audacity to detain you

Dont worry though the Aussies who have worked hard all their lives and are now being denied the government pension are quite happy to see you get the money

I don't think !!!!
