"English teacher out!" Student power calls for an end to violence and foul mouthed teacher

Students knowing they'll be passed encourages them to do nothing.

Teachers knowing they won't be fired doesn't encourage excellence.

One of the many things that hinders Thailand from becoming more than a 3rd world mentality country. A developed country is not the same as a developed society.

In "developed countries" teachers are often unionized and practically speaking can't be fired either - except for having sex with their students (unions haven't quite figured out how to get past that one yet)...    And they scream bloody murder any time someone suggests competence exams for them.  The more some things change, the more they stay the same.

Jaruwan's reply in her best English was:

I teach them talk good.

I come school every time.

I pass them English, no ploblem !

:cheesy: :cheesy:

You need to improve your Tinglish. It is poblem, not ploblem.

This guy needs to act ....  grow up and start managing.

sack her ....  and get on with running a school.

Easier said than done. In a Gvt school it is equal to having tenure in a Uni back home, or being in a union.

Very difficult to do without ending up in court.

If a falang... a tad easier.

Some of the members here must have learnt English at a Thai school..

"Than instead of "then""

"There,their and they're ".

"Where ,were, we're, ware, wear"

"Is" instead of "are"...

"There's" means "there is"

"There're " means "there are"

"There's " is not "theirs "

I could go on...

Fascinated by there're !! how do you say it without using the missing 'a'  ?

It's sad to see how ignorant some are of how English is used, by whom and under what conditions....and how it is learned.

There is no such thing as "Proper" English only the grossly uninformed would ever suggest that.

As for spelling and phonetics - we live in an age of spellchecks, predictive text, smart phones there are also those with dyslexia and international users of the English - many of whom post on this site.

There are also various forms of English - to get an idea check your spellcheck opinions - there are literally dozens of types of English with their concomitant variations in grammar and spelling.

It is also worth bearing in mind that many of the contributors to Thaivisa, retired now, never actually had any real education English - many left school at 15 or 16 and went into engineering - thy have until now never tried to put a coherent sentence together - and judging by the reasoning and ability to construct a logical argument they are in the majority here - however they do communication their views - however simple - and to criticise someone's viewpoint by using their abilities to spell etc is NOT AN ARGUMENT at all - it is the message, not the spelling, that is important.

PS - There's can be used "there is" or "there has" - the apostrophe "S" has a huge number of usages.

people who are well aware of the difference between "there, Their and THey're" - all homonyms but still frequently typed or written incorrectly due to the way we write - by "hearing" or "listening" to the sounds and rhythm  - spellcheck will then not  pick up on this as they are  valid words - if you have a grammar check you may be lucky. (I don't think TV has grammar check?)

do we expect perfect writing on a web forum? Well IMO life is too short.

what is needed is reasoned rational argument, regardless of spelling or grammar.

Agreed.  but using "than" in place of "then" and "where" in place of "were" make nonsense.

I think predictive text pick up and learns what you continually write....so it becomes the "normalisation of deviance".

"Normalisation of deviance".what on earth do you think that means?? - not only do you not understand how people write, you don't understand predictive text and spellchecks...it isn't a reflection on that person, it is a sad reflection on the person who tries to make something of it rather than actually put forward a cohesive, reasoned argument of their own.

I wonder what you'd have made of the "Great vowel shift"
