People warned against being overcharged taking motorcycle taxis to Grand Palace

People queuing to pay respect to late King have been warned against being overcharged by motorcycle taxi operators

Some of the motorcycle taxi operators plying on the Ratchadamnern – Grand Palace route are found to have overcharged people waiting in a queue to pay respect to the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej in the Grand Palace for a ride to a screening spot.

On Sept 30, while a large number of people were waiting in a queue, they were asked by some motorcycle taxi operators who offered to take them to the territorial defence centre, which is one of the screening points, saying that in doing so they would not have to wait for a long time.  The people who used their service were charged 50-60 baht, much higher than the legal rate of 25 baht for a distance of not more than 2 kilometres.

in my country i know basically how much i should pay for a service, why dont thais know basic costs and tell the over chargers to get lost?

it's only a 10 - 15 minute walk anyway. or if you simply cant walk for 15 minutes you could jump on a bus...

All the decent buses are still on the Quay, only the deathtraps run on the road.

Another good explaination why UBER or GRAB have become global multibillion or multimillion dollar babies !!

It's amazing what goes for "news" in this country!

A mixed bag tonight...

Ordered a Grab Taxi from outside my friend's condo in Pinklao about 9pm. It arrived on time, the lady driver was polite & professional. My friend prepaid by credit card.

Trying to get home from the less busy end of Khao San road was a different experience. Tuk tuks tried to gouge us, as per. All taxis refused to use the meter, no matter how far we walked to the main road. We managed to sweet talk one into taking us for 200B but when we arrived, he locked the doors & demanded 300B. Just short of an in-taxi brawl, he agreed to 250B.

The sooner these chimps are pushed out of the market, the better!

Yes but in this case those people go to pay their last respect to King Bhumibol, it's almost one year ago now.

Many motocytaxi's in that area brought them for free, just out of respect.

70.000 people go there every day now, all wearing black....this is going on for a year now, every day again...and they have to wait like 8 hours in line before they can see the ex-King.

The charge is what the market will tolerate...

even my remembered school economics tells me thats not correct; what if the service providers form a cartel, operate as a monopoly, engage in anticompetitive activities such as price fixing (intimidation this is thailand!)

there have been many very quiet months, so quiet many of my friends have been several times, what you are seeing now is all the people who put off going and realise the time in now limited.

Even a cartel can only charge what the market will tolerate.

I never said it would be a fair price...

The article wrote that there's is a max price for motocy taxi's...and they just double it...So it's time for the police to take action...but we all know they won't do it untill there is a massive crackdown...

Are other motocy taxi's from different neighbourhoods not allowed to go working in chinatown now?

Or, nearly anywhere you go.  They make like 300-600 percent.  Much cheaper to use your own or walk a bit
