Prayut tells Trump, but Prawit won’t confirm election date

Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan on Tuesday refused to confirm the election date despite the fact that Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha has informed US President Donald Trump that it will take place next year.

Prawit, who chaired the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, said the election date depended on the completion of the four organic laws necessary for it to be held.

Two of these laws have been promulgated – the Election Commission and the political parties laws – while the other two, concerning senators and the election of MPs, are still going through the drafting and deliberation process.

Once this is completed, there would be another 150 days for preparation by the Election Commission before the election could take place, Prawit said.

Prawit said he had no idea about reports that Prayut had confirmed the election date with Trump.

Asked whether the election would take place immediately after the designated 150 election-preparation days, Prawit just said it would follow the road map, which meant is would happen after the completion of the organic laws, after which political parties would be allowed to conduct political activities.

Im no body language expert but it looks like the President is making the General his bitch! A very dainty little handshake there from the military man.

More drivel. If the PM told Trump it will take place next year then he's already shown more respect to a 'farang' than he's ever shown to 'his own people'.

Round and round we go.

Agreed, PMT looks very subservient to POTUS. Inability to make eye contact may signify he is hiding something. It is said that if someone is hiding or lying about something they will have difficulty looking them in the eye. This is because they will be worried the person will see right through them and know what they are saying isn't the truth.

Nothing wrong with that, if we need tanks and soldiers in BKK again (for safety of course)  the elections can be another year...mai pen lai.

That is one possible outcome yes...

There could be other very well timed (planed) outcomes that could delay for at least another year though.

Whatever it takes....the army does a great job in keeping bangkok safe..i hope they'll stay here for another decade.

We don't need anymore "elected for 500 baht a vote" democracy in Thailand...if the majority is so stupid to sell their votes for the price of a decent meal they are better of with the army in control.

Please No election. At least not under current condition, which practically guarantees Taksin's puppets victory. Simply continue with delay tactics until Thailand is fully ready for real election.

Whatever it takes ?  Peace at any price ?  The only thing unsafe in Thailand is freedom of speech, universal suffrage and Thai history.  The vast majority of Thai people were very well behaved given the circumstances.  Referring otherwise is rather insulting and condescending.  Also, observers have stated that vote buying no longer has an impact on elections.   VOA reported that Yingluck's election was clean.  This sort of loathing and fear mongering only stokes hatred.

How could anyone give a specific date when your in the process of restoring a corrupt political system while protecting the royal family. Their is no conspiracy here. Prayut's  doing exactly what he said he was going to do. He's been honest. He's been rigid as well which is not popular with civilians with no military experience. Hopefully he recognizes the responsible farang retirees who have no other place to go on their pension and maintains their visa status here.. The King always stressed the essentials for daily life should be affordable to everyone in the kingdom which has saved the lives of many retirees.....

I don't think it's the ThB 500 so much as the coercion, intimidation, and peer pressure that makes so many put their crosses where told too. The 500 baht is just a sweeter but the real motivator is fear.

For the love of Buddha, get shit together and hold an election. I'm sure everyone's pockets are full by now.  Prove to the world that a dictatorship certainly can precede a democracy.
