Pattaya, Wong Amat beach vendors briefed on new rules

PATTAYA:--Chair and umbrella operators on Pattaya and Wong Amat beaches were given formal notice of regulatory changes and told to obtain licenses to sell food and drinks.

Maj. Gen. Popanan Luengpanuwat, acting for the National Council for Peace and Order, briefed the 118 Pattaya and 18 Wong Amat vendors Sept. 27.

Under the new rules, operators are limited to renting only one 9-by-7-meter plot, forbidden from transferring their franchise to children and relatives, subjected to bidding for their franchise every year, required to put out chairs only on request, and barred from cooking on the beach.

Each section can have 24 chairs and 20 umbrellas. The government has given each operator 18 earth-toned umbrellas and encouraged to use those to give the beach a uniform look.

They have to buy the new loungers from the City Council, surprise, surprise, at a total cost just shy of 10 K per plot. Tables are extra.

Charge for sitting on a lounger is set at 100 Baht. An operator I spoke to said that they will have to give discounts if anyone is to use them. The Army General appointed as mayor wants the beach to look like Phukets. He broaches no argument and dismisses any comments from operators.

Future "improvements" include the removal of all fridges/coolers. If you want a drink bring your own. There will be no coffee either, so buy a flask. All massage ladies will wear colour coded uniforms, as currently at Jomtien beach.

The City Council has given all operators a numbered blue apron, so it's not all take.

The problem is Pattaya beach is not Phuket beach..

Swimming in Pattayas water is unpleasant...

Most people don't make a day of Pattaya beach...

30-40 baht for a short sit on the chairs is not a problem for most...But a 100 baht?

They are working very very hard to make a problem

were there was not one...

And who exactly are all the new rules and restrictions serving? If not the tourist?

Whatever , I bring my own drinks and a mat to sit on . If they want vendors to lose business this is a start .
