Thailand admired for being Asia's best in non-communicable diseases management

 

 

NAKHON PATHOM, 11 October 2017 (NNT) – Thailand was admired by the World Health Organization for being the best country in Asia in non-communicable chronic diseases management on par with Finland and Norway. 

Public Health Minister Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn presided over WHO-SEAR Regional Forum to Accelerate NCDs Prevention and Control in the Context of SDGs held by WHO South and South East Asia Regional Office (WHO-SEARO), the Thai Health Promotion Foundation, and the National Health Security Office during 9 to 11 October 2017 at Sampran Garden, Nakhon Pathom. 

Some 130 persons from 11 countries are participating in the forum which aims to enhance the prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) by reducing key risk factors under the regional framework of management. 

The minister said NCDs are considered an urgent crisis which needs to be addressed in the national and international levels as they cause up to 16 million premature deaths each year globally from heart diseases, lung diseases, strokes, cancers, and diabetes, while up to 80 percent of casualties come from low to medium-income countries, particularly in the South and Southeast Asian regions. 

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) include an objective to cut down deaths from NCDs by one-third by 2030, which will require cooperation from al sides, especially local organizations which are the closest to the general public. 

The WHO gave Thailand 12 out of 19 points on the NCDs management, which is 8 score higher than 2015. This makes Thailand the best country in Asia for NCDs management, on par with Finland and Norway.

Every other news agency in the world would probably have chosen "commended" or perhaps "lauded" over "admired," but of course not NNT, as it is run by the Thai government and we all know how much they crave to be admired all the time.

Maybe it's a stupid question but what is there to manage if the disease is non-communicable?

As I understand it this is things like obesity or smoking related diseases.  They are not communicable between people but you can take steps to treat or prevent.

So thai people are not fat but there is a huge hiv ,std enviornment here.

I guess that the management of "mental illness" is not part of the non-communicable disease category.
