CityNews – Police have caught and fined a man using a fake ID claiming he is a reporter from Channel 8 and the Chiang Mai Biker Association to solicit donations from people around the Night Bazaar area.

According to a police report published on October 11th, a 32-year-old man from Ayutthaya was arrested after it was found that he had been using a fake ID to solicit donations from people in Chiang Mai. He had reportedly walked around the Night Bazaar most evenings with documents asking for donations for various causes as a representative of Channel 8 and the Chiang Mai Bikers Association.

He told police he had been doing this since 2016 after coming to Chiang Mai on the free train, earning up to 4,000 baht per day. He confessed to the crime and told police he did the same in Lamphun, Lampang and Lopburi.

And smoking on a beach will land you a fine of up to B100,000

Fraud in this country is as common as frogs croaking.

Smoking on the beach is limited to the well-to-dos...

Everyone sees the irony of it commit fraud and they levy a 200 baht fine Flick a cigarette but on the beach and get levied a fine of 100,000 baht

Hmm,...it's good to be a Thai criminal in Thailand..Farangs on the other hand get the full force of the law.

I think many posters are under a bit of misapprehension about this smoking thing. Thais and the Chinese hordes will be free to do what they like. Bit like the Bt2000 littering (cig butt) fine in BKK. A Thai can stand next to BIB, flick a butt and nothing.

If anyone did ever give to any of those charitable causes, often sought by groups of students or little boxes on counters in various shops, hopefully this may clue them in a bit? And even if the ones asking are legit, like the students, what are the odds that the organization they give the money to is as corrupt as this guy? Pretty good, I'd say.... Since there is virtually no penalty, what's to stop corrupt individuals from going for broke!?

4.000 Baht/day ?  Thais are very generous then.

200 Baht fine ?  Good to know policemen are not greedy.

Generous Thais? I don't think so... the night bazaar area, where he plied his trade, is packed with, apparently ignorant, tourists.
The policemen aren't greedy? hmmm well, maybe the reason he got arrested in the first place was because he didn't provide little brown envelopes often or thick enough.
Of course, you could be right though, there's always that needle in the haystack just waiting to be found  ;)

I think based on those statistics even Arthur Daley would have considered it " a nice little earner "
