Cambodia will commemorate the fifth anniversary of the death of King Norodom Sihanouk on Sunday, honouring the leader who gained independence from the French, along with reconciliation, reunification and development. The National Committee for Organising National and International Festivals on Wednesday issued a letter instructing ministries and provincial authorities to organise the event and prepare a budget for the ceremony.

It added that government officials, the royal family, public servants and all citizens would mark the King’s death on October 15. King Sihanouk passed away from natural causes on October 15, 2012, in Beijing. He was 90.

According to the committee, a delegation from each ministry and organisation will be invited to pay tribute at the Samdech Preah Borom Ratanak Kod Statue, near the Independence Monument. Each ministry and provincial hall will have to display the new photo of King Sihanouk with multi-coloured light decorations, flags and banners.
