PHUKET: A male Russian tourist was pulled unconscious from the water at Karon Beach by beach operators and tourists today (Oct 15). He was later pronounced dead at Patong Hospital.

The Royal Thai Navy Third Area Command stationed at the Tourist Help Centre in Karon Municipality received a report that a tourist had drowned at a section of beach close to Karon Circle at 10am.

Navy officers and Phuket Tourist Police arrived at the scene to find Russian national Mr Parshukov Oleg, 42, unconscious on the beach.

RIP Oleg.

Sad but no surprise. May fate hit the guys hard who in charge of this no lifeguards show!

No indication as to what happened here but Karon is one of the most dangerous beaches for rip currents. Having no lifeguards to hand on such a beach, and the fact he was pulled from the water by tourists and beach operators would indicate there weren't, is just asking for people to drown.

What's more important?

1. Take care of the beaches to make sure no one drowns?

2. Patrol the beaches to make sure no one smokes?

The lifeguard fiasco seems to have been forgotten during the no smoking farce.

I agree with your post. I strongly believe that there should be lifeguards at the touristy beaches in Thailand. It baffles me that they don't have this service. I don't want to compare, but back home even small river or lake beaches have safeguards. Totally irresponsible. People drown in large numbers in Thailand!

Smoking on the beach attracts a fine.  (money maker)

Lifeguards on the beach cost money. (money loser)

Not hard to see which one is more important here.  It's all about the money, with the loss of life of little concern to those in power.

I knew that someone would post this response, which is, of course, spot on.
