Thai Border gate closed by protest

Hundreds of vendors protested and closed the Phnom Dey border gate in Battambang’s Sampov Loun district yesterday morning to demand a change in policy over their export of produce to Thailand. In a video posted online, protesters can be heard complaining of unfair treatment in comparison to their Thai counterparts.

They said they want the Thai authorities to remove the 10 kilogram limit on their agricultural products including chilli, mango, and cabbage. The protesters explained that they must produce a quality check certificate when their products weigh more than 10 kilos, which cuts into their profits since they are not exporting large quantities.

Khim Tipmuny, chief of the border gate, said Thai buyers were the ones who persuaded the Cambodian vendors to protest for their own benefit. “The Thai buyers want to bring more Cambodian produce to Bangkok and they are trying to evade biochemical checks,” he said. “With the current limit in place, the Thai buyers cannot collect enough produce from our vendors, so they persuaded the Cambodians to protest to pressure the authorities on both sides.”  Mr Tipmuny said the protest only slight disrupted the border checkpoint and that it reopened quickly.

What biochemical checks are done on Thai produce ?

Don't know.

Is that relevant?

It isn't like other countries don't require checks on imported fruit and veg.... some would take them off you at the airport for a single item.
