Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, in his capacity as chairman of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), has instructed army chief Gen Chalermchai Sitthisad to order all regional army commanders to closely monitor the situation and get ready to help the people affected by floods, Maj Gen Piyapong Klinphan, a spokesman for the NCPO, said on Tuesday (Oct 17).

Gen Chalermchai, as NCPO secretary, has ordered army units in all regions to prepare their personnel, including medical teams, vehicles and disaster relief equipment.  They are to be on stand by to be dispatched to affected areas along with necessities including drinking water and medicine.

Maj Gen Piyapong said flooding is reported to be in a serious condition in several provinces in the North as the Thai Meteorological Department has predicted there will be more rain during Oct 17-19.

Lt Gen Kukiat Srinaka, the 1st Army Region commander in charge of the Central Region, said local army units have been instructed to respond immediately to all emergencies according to the plan.  The priority will be given to people in the upper Central Region, both in and outside irrigated zones.

Why only October 17-19? The dangerous water runoff along Chao Phraya might take weeks. October and November are very dangerous months for Thailand when the water comes from the North. And the news aren't so good at the moment. The dams are getting full and the rainfall continues. Right now, Oct 17th in the evening, it is raining cats and dogs over a large part in the North. The forecast shows heavy rainfall for central part after midnight towards Wednesday which is worrisome. The soil is saturated with water. The water table is very high. At this point a rainfall above 20 mm can cause flash floods.

Prayut orders the army to prepare for floods.:cheesy:

Every soldier will be given a bucket, and told to fill it, there that will alleviate the situation.:cheesy:

Thais have difficulty thinking beyond breakfast tomorrow morning. 17-19th is as far into the future that can be humanly comprehended. Especially funny is that the order is to be prepared for flooding, when half of Bangkok and many other places are under water already.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, is the chairman of the ...........(fill in the blanks) committee.

No need to keep on telling us this. Prayut is the self appointed chairman of just about every committee on the go in Thailand. He is the ultimate micro-manager.

And when the fat lady finishes singing and Thailand is awash then the blame stops with him......that is until he can quickly pass it on to someone like Prawit who can be readily fingered for incompetence.

really astonishing how bad the water management here is; apparently no hydro-engineers nor managers who can think

I'm sure they're probably thinking about how to slow the water flowing into Bangkok around the 26th.

Cancel the subs and tanks; order three million pairs of wellies.

Prayut makes this order on Oct. 17 - one day minimum to mobilize and it's Oct. 18. I guess best to be really, really late than never.

I have been considering this.....Could be a monumental balls up. Fingers crossed it isnt but 'maintenance' of anything here leaves a lot to be desired....the pumps...the drains???

Beat me to it, I was thinking more along the lines of a bucket brigade, but then that might be a bit complicated to organise.

Water management, is that having a pee before going to bed for the night?
