Thailand, U.S. to form joint panel on trade, investment

BANGKOK, 18th October 2017 (NNT) - The Thai Chamber of Commerce will set up a Thai-U.S. joint committee to drive trade between the two countries. The work of the committee will be an expansion of Thai-U.S. economic cooperation, following Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s visit to the U.S.

Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade of Thailand, Klin Sarasin said today the Thai and U.S. Chambers of Commerce have agreed to expand their cooperation in terms of trade, investment and tourism. Thailand will host a meeting on the matter for the first time in 2018 which will mark the 185th anniversary of the Thai-U.S. diplomatic ties, said Mr. Kalin.

The meeting will be held annually to serve as a forum to exchange opinions on trade policy and problems, and any obstacles in the Thai-U.S. business. The two countries are drafting an MoU as proposed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to set frameworks for trade, investment and businesses that the countries will mutually promote.

Thailand has proposed investment in the energy, service, innovation, education and health sectors while the U.S. has shown interest in investing more in Thailand, particularly the Eastern Economic Corridor.

Obviously a long over due meeting, and of course how can anyone forget the constantly stated ad infinitum diplomatic ties.  The Thais side is doing a bit too much oversell here.  It has been stale for a while now.

Thai customs department, Thai duties, inspections that have you waiting for hours near Hua Lamphong are all obstacles.  There are no bright spots.
