Hello. In the past 3 months I have unintentionally adopted a beautiful, loving semi-soi dog. He has a Thai owner but I more or less have been taking care of him since July. Taken him to the vet for shots, antibiotics & a general check up. He is healthy as can be now. I've bathed him numerous times. He eats only fresh "liver on a stick" or chopped/minced chicken. Little bugger won't eat canned dog food. He follows me everywhere & I cant shake him off unless he's left with the "real" owner or tied up. The real owners (unfortunately poor) would just let him rot filthy dirty & no veterinarian or normal family pet care at all, other than feeding it. (I took their smaller dog to the vet also).

He waits for me at my door if he gets into my building which is often. He stays with me all night at the foot of my bed.  He is the sweetest, calmest, quietest loving dog. Loves his belly rubs. Needless to say, I am quite attached to him & it would break my heart to abandon him which is most likely what I'd have to do if I cant sort this out.

Have any of you had experience sending a pet back to your home country. For me its Canada. How did you do it? What are the procedures? How much did it cost? How long did it take? what other obstacles are there? How do you get this done?

I have tried contacting Soi Dog Foundation but have not heard back from them.

Sending this out there to hopefully find some advice & answers.

Thanks for your help.

I had to arrange for 2 dogs to go from Thailand earlier this year and did a lot of research at the time. You need to go online and specifically look at the Canadian import requirements as these can vary from country to country.

Some of my research here may help you get an idea - there are some links to TV posts as well but there may be more recent ones if you do a search on this forum. The word file is from the handling company that I used. Sorry but cannot seem to upload this document.......?

Depending on which airline you are going to use they should be able to recommend a handling agent.

You also need to consider the cost/process of clearance in Canada.

Normally you should start by making sure the dog is up to date with the required injections, micro chipped and then rabies tested. Normally this needs to be 3/4 months before planned departure.....
