Hello,

I have the desire to become a buddhist monk in the thai forest tradition. My question concerns the visas. Are there special visas for buddhist monks and are they allowed to have a permanent residency visa (even if they do not work and have money) or the thai nationality after a while?

Thanks

My best suggestion would be to contact Peter Robinson (Phra Peter Pannapadipo during his 10 years in the monkhood) at [email protected] to ask if he can briefly advise you. Please be respectful of his time, and do not constantly pepper him with questions. At one time, he ran courses advising Westerners interested in becoming monks, but his time is now more than fully occupied with his student and orphanage charities. (You could consider a donation to The SET Foundation, which has recently seen falling donations, in recognition of any help he gives you.)

You could get a non-r visa at a embassy or consulate and then one year extensions of stay.

The from the police order for extensions of stay. Some embassies and consulates will want the same supporting document to get the non-r visa.

Quote

2.13 In the case of studying Buddhism or practicing religious activities:
Each permission shall be granted for no more than one year.
The alien:
(1) Must have been granted a non-immigrant visa (NON-IM).
(2) Must have been confirmed and requested by the National Office of Buddhism, or Office of the Prune Minister, or Mahachulalongkomrajavidyalaya University, or Mahamakut Buddhist University.
(3) Must have been confirmed by the abbot of the temple where the applicant is studying Buddhism or practicing religious activities.

After a several years of being a monk you could possibly apply for permanent residency if recommended by a government official under the special circumstance rule for residency.

I have just removed 15 off topic posts that resulted from one off topic inflammatory post. Let it run for a while but decided it was time to end it.

So as I understand it, permanent visa or the thai naturalisation (after 5 years) is not possible?

As I wrote earlier you wll be able to get one year extension of stay. Then after at least 3 years of them you may be able to apply for permanent residence under the special conditions rule on a case by case basis if you are recommended for it by a government official.

See "3.5 Qualification of applicant on extra circumstances to be considered on a case by case basis" here https://www.immigration.go.th/pdf/26122546_regulation_notice_en.pdf

Then after 5 years on permanent residency there are clauses in the nationality act that could allow you to apply for Thai nationality.

One more question:

When you say "after 5 years of permanent residency", do you mean since you are in Thaïland or since you get the permanent residency visa?

Thanks

Five years from the date you are granted permanent residency.

Hi I have read this: "Once your application for Thai Permanent Residency is approved, a residence blue book is issued to you. You must then register your place of residence in Thailand at the local Amphur and obtain a house card. A week after the receipt of your residence certificate you can then apply for an alien book (red book) at the local police station, which is the equivalent of the Thai national ID card. You must re-register there every year."

So as I understand it, when you have the blue book and the house card, you don't have to but you apply for the alien book (red book).

And if you have the blue book and house card (but do not apply for the red book), your permit is illimited and there is no need to re-register every year.

Right?

You only have to register every 5 years at a police station not every year.

I assume you mean a blue tambien ban at an Amphoe when you wrote house card. You have to get permission from a Thai to be registered in their tambien ban.

Ok, so if you have Just your permanent residency permit, you don't have to re-register every 5 years?

You have to register at a police station to get the red alien book. Then you report your address to them every 5 years.

Ok, but as I understand it, The permanent residency permit and the red alien book are two different things.

My question is: Do you MUST get a red alien book after getting the permanent residency (or is it just an option)?

And if it is just an option and decide to not get the red alien book and have ONLY the permanent residency permit, do you have to re-register every 5 years?

The blue residency book is done by immigration.

Getting the red alien book at a police station is mandatory and that is where the registration is done every 5 years.

Ok, so you can just keep your blue residency book and not go to the police station after getting it?
