Joint forces from the General Department of Immigration and Preah Sihanouk province on Saturday morning arrested 41 suspects for allegedly running a Voice over Internet Protocol scam. Up until now, the majority of those caught for running VoIP scams have been Chinese or Taiwanese, but 33 of the suspects apprehended on Saturday were Malaysian, Thai, Indonesian, and Vietnamese. The remaining eight were from China and Taiwan.

Lim Bunheng, deputy prosecutor at Preah Sihanouk Provincial Court, said the raid was carried out in Mittapheap district. “We had provincial police and immigration officials from Phnom Penh, as well as a warrant from the provincial court,” he said.

“We arrested 41 suspects and sent them to the General Department of Immigration in Phnom Penh.” Major General Uk Heisela, chief investigator at the Interior Ministry’s immigration department, said forces stormed four locations as part of the raid and seized evidence of the alleged crimes.

Voice over Internet Protocol scam.  Sorry but being internet ignorant, what is this?

VoIP is short for Voice over Internet Protocol.

Voice over Internet Protocol is a category of hardware and software that enables people to use the Internet as the transmission medium for telephone calls by sending voice data in packets using IP rather than by traditional circuit transmissions of the PSTN.

Advantages of VoIP

One advantage of VoIP is that the telephone calls over the Internet do not incur a surcharge beyond what the user is paying for Internet access, much in the same way that the user doesn't pay for sending individual emails over the Internet.

Scammers use this system to obtain credit card details etc..........

One VoIP scam from a while back used both emails and calls to convince the person being scammed that their credit card information/bank information was stolen: via email, victims were given a number to call - or the victims were cold-called and given false phone numbers. Either way, in both circumstances, the scammers used their deception to gain financial information from their victims. The scammers were even able to imitate a bank's phone tree with their own VoIP PBX.

Hope this helps.....don't fall for it .....
