Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha on Monday led his Cabinet members in laying flowers in front of the statue of King Rama V to pay respects to the great monarch on the occasion of the 107th anniversary of his death.

The PM and ministers paid their respects at the statue in the Royal Plaza to show gratitude for the great deeds that the late king had done for the country during his reign, including the abolition of slavery and the modernisation of the Kingdom, as well as his foreign policies that prevented the nation from being colonised.

Deputy Defence Minister Genl Udomdej Sitabutr also led Gen Theppong Tippayachan, who is permanent secretary for the Defence Ministry, Supreme Commander Gen Thanchalermchai Sisuwan, Army Commander-in-Chief Gen Chalermchai Sitthisart, Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Naris Pathumsuwan, and Air Force Commander-in-Chief ACM Jom Rungsawang, as well as Police Commissioner-General Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda, in paying respects at the statue.

Senior police and military officers and their wives also attended the ceremony.

Representatives from various government agencies, politicians, teachers, and students from schools and universities also came to the statue in the morning to lay garlands and flowers to pay respects to the late monarch, called by Thais “the Beloved Great King”.

Among the agencies and institutions with representatives taking part in the ceremony were the Office of National Anti-Corruption Commission, King Prajadhipok’s Institute, Chitralada School and Vajiravudh College.
