WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican lawmakers on Tuesday launched investigations to examine several of President Donald Trump's longstanding political grievances, including the FBI probe of Hillary Clinton's emails and her alleged role in a sale of U.S. uranium to a Russian firm.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte and House Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy announced a probe to address "outstanding questions" about why former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey publicly disclosed the bureau's investigation of Clinton but never disclosed one into Trump's associates in the 2016 presidential campaign.

"These investigations were initiated on a partisan basis, and will shed no light on Russia's interference in the 2016 election, but then again they are not intended to do so," Representative Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said Tuesday in a statement.

Instead, said Schiff, "they are designed to distract attention and pursue the President's preferred goal – attacking Clinton and Obama."

Republicans in Congress also are investigating whether officials in former President Barack Obama's administration spied on Trump's campaign and whether Russians helped pay for a dossier on Trump commissioned by Fusion GPS, an opposition research firm. So far, there is no evidence to support either allegation.

Clinton was Trump's Democratic rival in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and faced questions about her handling of classified material after it became public that she used a private email server in her home for some of her correspondence.

Since winning the presidential vote last year, Trump has been beset by questions about Russian efforts to manipulate the U.S. election and whether any of his campaign advisers, some of whom had contacts with Russian officials, were involved.

URANIUM DEAL

The Republican leaders of the House intelligence and oversight committees on Tuesday announced another new probe, this one into an Obama-era deal in which a Russian company bought a Canadian firm that owned some 20 percent of U.S. uranium supplies.

The Republican lawmakers said they want to know if the transaction was fully investigated by the FBI and other agencies before a panel that oversees foreign investment in U.S. strategic assets approved it.

Representative Peter King said he sent a letter to then-Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner raising "very, very real concerns about why we would allow a Russian-owned company to get access to 20 percent of America's uranium supply."

Some Republicans have said Hillary Clinton's State Department approved the deal after her husband's charitable foundation received a $145 million donation. But the State Department has only one seat on the panel that approved the transaction, and the New York Times has reported that Clinton did not participate in the decision.

Republican Senator Chuck Grassley, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said late on Tuesday on Twitter that the Justice Department should appoint a special counsel to investigate the uranium deal.

All the new investigations address longstanding Trump grievances. The president complained late last week that the news media have ignored the uranium deal while focusing on whether any of his campaign aides colluded with Russia.

"That's your real Russia story," he said. "Not a story where they talk about collusion and there was none. It was a hoax."

Trump also charged in a Twitter note last week that former FBI Director James Comey had exonerated Clinton long before the bureau's investigation of her had been completed.

"Obviously a fix? Where is Justice Dept?" he wrote.

After first clearing Clinton in the email probe, Comey announced 11 days before the election that the FBI had begun investigating a newly discovered batch of Clinton emails. Clinton has said Comey's letter to Congress on the issue tilted the race to Trump.

No matter what you think of her, Hillary Clinton last held public office in 2012 (?) and now is nothing more than a retired, failed Presidential candidate.

It is embarrassing to see what the GOP has sunk to. It used to be a party that I sometimes agreed with, sometimes didn't, but I never doubted its good intentions or its good will. Now it is a party of grievance and bile.

Sad to see a once great party, the party of Lincoln no less, stoop so low.

It's called a revolution of the political establishment. Why is it so hard to understand?GOP and Dem's  won't succumb  to change without a battle.

The objective is to drain the swamp.

Similar to Trump's statement, when asked (during one of last year's debates) whether Obama should name a nominee, according to presidential duties outlined in the Constitution, ....for a vacant Supreme Court Seat, and Trump said, "DELAY, DELAY, DELAY".....

He could now say 'DIVERT, DIVERT, DIVERT' ....when it comes to the important work being done by Mueller's team.  Well, Trump COULD say that, if he had a milligram of decency.

Consumer Bureau Loses Fight to Allow More Class-Action Suits

Senate Republicans voted on Tuesday to strike down a sweeping new rule that would have allowed millions of Americans to band together in class-action lawsuits against financial institutions.

The overturning of the rule, with Vice President Mike Pence breaking a 50-to-50 tie, will further loosen regulation of Wall Street as the Trump administration and Republicans move to roll back Obama-era policies enacted in the wake of the 2008 economic crisis. By defeating the rule, Republicans are dismantling a major effort of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the watchdog created by Congress in the aftermath of the mortgage mess.

What will Republicans do next?  ....perhaps they'll find that Hillary and a friend once snuck into a neighbor's back yard one night in 1971, and went swimming.  ooooooh, that should be salacious!  Did the girls wear bathing suits, or go nude?   Wow, that will get Republicans foaming at the mouth.

Doesn't matter how long someones been out of office. If evidence comes to light of serious wrong doing it needs investigating not simply sweeping under the carpet.

Oh gawd, here we go again.  Benghazi.  Russia.  With all their committees, sub-committees, special commissions, where do these political jobsworths find the time to do their real jobs.  :saai:

It would be interesting to see what politicians do each working day.  If Kushner is any indication, they do nothing, except maybe check their investments, and where they can get ever more big loans.   For Kushner, it's Russia, but even the Russkies are probably getting donor fatigue with him and the Trump family.  The M.East is probably more friendly loan territory.

Two things come to mind:

A. We've been hearing for a year that all those mainstream media outlets were nothing but 'fake news' according to Republicans.

B.  Both major parties pay for data that they deem may be pertinent to helping their campaigns. Both the dems and the Reps paid for intel, some of it from Russkies.

There is an investigation of the Republican party for trying to get information from the Russians but we know not what information was gotten, how it was disseminated and/or if it made any difference.  However we do know about the British secret service guy who wrote a fabricated report of lies about Trump bought and paid for by Clinton but no investigation.  Do I have it right?

No, you have it wrong. Have you been paying attention?

Q. what info?  Answer: mostly malicious lies about HRC. Also divisive false info about US blacks vs whites, which bolsters Republicans, who are always trying to spook US sheeple.  A direct quote from a Rep former NY mayor at the Rep convention, "You must be afraid!!!"

Q. How disseminated?  Answer:  Among other dirty tricksters, it was disseminated by Stone, Kushner, and Manafort, ....working in collusion with Russian agents and hackers.

Q. Difference?  Answer:  Yes, very much.  Swing states were targetted, down to the precinct level...

Q. The Brit secret service guy (Steele) Answer: Thus far, the info in his dossier has been scrutinized and found to be credible.

Any more things you need cleared up?    Get informed.  It helps to stay abreast of things.

CNN "Let's start with the facts.
At issue is a dossier prepared by Christopher Steele, a former British spy, which details explosive allegations about potential ties between Trump's campaign and Russia. The dossier's more salacious elements regarding Trump have drawn most of the attention -- and remain totally unproven.

https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/7/13/15952212/trump-russia-investigation-evidence

Again, the big picture is that there is a whole lot of smoke, and whether there is fire is the subject of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

But so far there is still no publicly reported solid evidence that Trump advisers and the Russian government had any sort of secret arrangement or shared information about Russian interference in the election.

I always post links and facts.  You have posted innuendo.

GOP games again as usual.

Perhaps Trump begging GOP to be saved. And trump will do everything in favor of GOP in return. "Especially tax cut for big guys" that has been GOP main goal at all times.

Presidents come and go, but GOP is always there with same guideline and direction. To serve and protect insurance companies gun makers and wealthy people (but of course senators had been supported by them to become "senators") by tax cut and voting in their favor when it is needed.

I must agree that Trump is wonderful at diverting attention from real issues to the inane!  Clinton's emails have been investigated to death with no wrongdoing found!  The Republicans also have the soundbite down to an art form!  Slogans instead of positive action are the rule of the day!

Lock her up!

Make America great again!

Big beautiful wall!

Drain the swamp!

etc, etc.

Sadly, the only Republicans that will compromise or take on Trump are the quitters!  I thank the heavens for every day that I no longer live in Trump's America!  Are Americans now really so parochial that they do not realize that the rest of the world is laughing at them??

Yes well said may I add to it . This Fusion GPS who hired the Brit. was also hired by Putin once upon a time .Apparently Putin felt threaten by this Russian official Khodorkovsky and had him smeared through FGPS.  Khodorkovsky went to trial and jailed for 10 years and exiled. The 2 key FGPS figures appeared on Capital Hill and pleaded the 5th in response to  the Trump dossier .  Clinton and the DNC colluding with Russia. This is huge. Good article on this below
