Ex-Trump campaign manager Manafort surrenders to FBI - reports

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Paul Manafort, a former campaign manager for U.S. President Donald Trump, surrendered to federal authorities on Monday in the first charges stemming from a special counsel investigation of possible Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, according to media reports.

 

Manafort arrived at the Federal Bureau of Investigation Washington field office, television video showed. He was to surrender to federal authorities, the New York Times and CNN reported, citing sources.

 

The charges against Manafort would be the first arising from the investigation by Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller, who was appointed to look into alleged Russian meddling to sway the election in favour of Trump.

 

The charges against Manafort would include tax fraud, according to the Wall Street Journal.

 

A federal grand jury issued the indictment on Friday and a federal judge ordered it sealed, a source briefed on the matter told Reuters, adding it could be unsealed as soon as Monday.

 

Manafort associate Rick Gates would also surrender, the Times reported.

 

Lawyers for Gates and Manafort would not immediately return calls for comment.

 

Manafort, 68, served the Trump campaign from June to August of 2016 before resigning amid reports he may have received millions in illegal payments from a pro-Russian political party in Ukraine.

 

Mueller has been investigating Manafort’s financial and real estate dealings and his prior work for that political group, the Party of Regions, which backed former Ukrainian leader Viktor Yanukovich, sources have told Reuters.

 

Investigators also examined potential money laundering by Manafort and other possible financial crimes, according to the sources.

 

Gates was a long-time business partner of Manafort and has ties to many of the same Russian and Ukrainian oligarchs. He also served as deputy to Manafort during his brief tenure as Trump’s campaign chairman.

 

Trump has denied any allegations of collusion with the Russians and called the probe "a witch hunt." The Kremlin also has denied the allegations.

 

Just before the Manafort report came out, Trump senior adviser Kellyanne Conway insisted any charges would not necessarily implicate Trump or his campaign.

 

"Whatever happens today with the Mueller investigation, we don't even know that it has anything to do with the campaign ...," Conway said on Fox.

 

The Russia investigation has cast a shadow over Trump's 9-month-old presidency and widened the partisan rift between Republicans and Democrats.

 

U.S. intelligence agencies concluded in January that Russia interfered in the election to try to help Trump defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton by hacking and releasing embarrassing emails and disseminating propaganda via social media to discredit her.

 

Mueller is also investigating whether Trump campaign officials colluded with the Russian efforts.

      Mr. Manafort, a veteran Republican strategist, joined the Trump campaign in March 2016 to help keep delegates from breaking with Mr. Trump in favor of establishment Republican candidates. Mr. Trump soon promoted him to chairman and chief strategist, a job that gave him control over day-to-day operations of the campaign. 
But Mr. Trump fired Mr. Manafort just months later, after reports that he received more than $12 million in undisclosed payments from Viktor F. Yanukovych, the former Ukrainian president and a pro-Russia politician. Mr. Manafort spent years as a political consultant for Mr. Yanukovych.

I'm just wondering what the difference between the Ukrainian president and the mafia is, and Manafort as the "political consultant" must have learnt  a lot of new tricks.  Is Russia finally ruling America remote controlled?

Trump didn't know people like Manafort, Gates, and Carter Page before his campaign, all of whom had ties to the Russians for years before the 2016.  The fact that they all were given powerful positions in Trump's campaign has lead some to suspect that they were sent by the Russians specifically for the purpose of getting Trump elected and indebted to the Russians.  The main point of the Steele Dossier is the allegation that the Russians were cultivating Trump for years before the 2016 campaign.

 

So, if those suspicions are correct, then, yes, Trump is the Manchurian Candidate.

The difference between the former Russian-backed Ukrainian President that Manafort worked for and the mafia is that the mafia are less ostentatious, less greedy and less slimy.

 

Is Russia running the Administration by remote control? Who knows? But if I were a Russian dictator, here’s my wish list:

 

A decimated, underfunded State Dept headed by a “friend of Russia”

 

A reluctance by the president to sign Russia sanctions bills.

 

A reluctance to implement said bills if forced to sign.

 

Sow internal divisions within the US.

 

Alienate NATO allies.

 

Allienate neighbors and friends.

 

Sow mistrust among allies and provoke enemies.

 

scrupulously avoid any criticisms of Russia.

There is fairly strong suspicion that Trump’s campaign manager may have sold out to the Russians.

 

There is *some* slight indication that Trump May have done so.

 

There is absolutely *no* indication that Clinton has done so.

Manafort has known a lot of dirty tricks for many years.  He worked shoulder to shoulder with one of the top dirty trickters in the US;  Roger Stone.  Indeed, Republicans have the all ten of the top ten dirty tricksters, including Atwater.   

 

US politics allows dirty tricks galore.  There's no limit on money, manipulating, lies, and spreading untrue dirt on your opponent.  Republicans and Russians are experts at that subterfuge.  When a Republican takes a time-out from his dirty-tricks business, I can picture him crawling into a cess pit to cool off.
