Eye Exam

Zenni continues to surprise me.  Just to see what I would get, I ordered a $6.95 pair of single vision reading glasses made to my prescription from their website.  I wasn't expecting much but when they arrived in Bangkok 10 days from ordering I was surprised that the frames looked good, were comfortable and the lenses were spot on...very clear with no distortion or fringing.

Though I have progressives (also from Zenni) that I use most of the time, I use the reading glasses when I'm reading a book for more than an hour as they seem to be less fatiguing for long term reading.

I have to say the same, I ordered a pair of progressives about 2 months ago thinking well here goes nothing. When I got them they were perfect and about a forth of what I would have paid here. And actually I went to a shop here that was recommended and because I recently had gotten my prescription in the USA, they said they could guarantee nothing. So I left and ordered from Zenni online.

  • 2 weeks later...

Avoid Top Charoen blue and white shop in every soi. They will say you have a problem even if you are 20/20.

St Louis 900 baht eye check and they will supply the lens number that you need.. if at all. They dont expect you to buy the glasses at hospital prices, so nothing to gain by 'lying' to you

i thought progressives have to be accurately centred on the eye and only an optician can do that? how did you know what specs to give for the order?

when you order from zenni you simply provide the data that appears on your prescription...and the prescription provided by Rutnin was exactly what they needed...

I understand your concern as before I always wore bifocals and the optician would do a visual/manual measurement for centering or whatever...these zenni progressives are as good or better than I've had before...

there is an entry on the zenni order form for PD or pupillary distance and this item appears on the Rutnin prescription...someone in a previous post on this thread mentioned the significance of this measurement with regard to a similar concern...

Tutsi, would you mind sharing your prescription. I need rather “strong" lenses. Previously it has taken a couple of tries at the opticians before they've gotten it right. With, a couple of tries, I mean making new lenses. Fortunately at no cost to me. It shouldn't have to be like that, but for some reason they got strength wrong one time and the center was off the second time.

I'd like to try Zenni since my lenses are around 19k and that hurts a bit. Especially if you want an extra pair.

+ 1...Top Charoen are the biggest rip off in Thailand...I got specs from them once many years ago and all the metal bits disintegrated in about 6 months...made from unsuitable materials apparently when the assembly is required to handle salty sweat, etc...ridiculous...

never bought specs in Thailand after that...

Thanks, Ive just been to the website.

On my last prescription my pupil distance is shown as 30.5/31 the only thing is I dont know if that means the left is 30.5 and the right 31 or the other way around. I wonder of there is standard convention. Common sense says left would be 30.5 and right 31 but the world doesnt always work in the way I expect. I guess I could just make it 31 for both, can half a mm make much difference I wonder.

Anyway, I think I will give these guys a go, could save a lot of money as prices for the thinnest index lenses and good frames still seem to be slightly under half what I paid last time at an optician for my current pair, which was in Malaysia.

I got my first specs about 25 years ago and paid about GBP350 in the UK...then about 2 years later I got drunk and lost them while traveling on a bus between Vina del Mar and Santiago in Chile...and I came into work the next day with cheap reading glasses that I bought at the metro station and the secretary said: 'awww, mr tutsi....did you get drunk and stumble around and lose yer nice glasses?...'...she was fat and vicious...

the fat secretary was probably jealous.

I have always got my PD measurement as one number, ie in my case, 63. I usually order glasses, be it full rim or half-rim, plastic or metal frame with adjustable nose pads so I can fit the glasses more comfortably. Else all plastic frames have to be heated (have read that a hair blow dryer works) then shaped to fit.

I think the next pair of glasses I order from Zenni will have photochromic lenses.

  • 4 months later...

I have pheripheral glaucoma in one eye and when I needed to do an eye test I went to PIH !!!  Although the opthamologist seemed informative and thorough it was definitely over the top when it came to the bill  !!   Result of that test was that my present medication (latanoprost ) was not containing the pressure so medication was changed to Cosopt with advise to check if this was effective after one month .

Next time round I decided to investigate where it was possible to get either field test or pressure test (tonometry ) done locally and costs !   None of the opticians can do any of these tests and most didn't even know what I was talking about !! Avoid all opticians for these tests .  Next I searched online for clinics and found that Pattaya Memorial Hospital does the pressure test ( at half the cost if PIH !!!)  . Nowhere else local except BHP and PIH  so I gave it go. The opthamologist was very informative and they have latest equipment for this test which is more accurate than the "puff test " !!  Cost for this was 1700 Bht but unfortunately they do not have the equipment to do the field test -  other than that I was well impressed .

Seems like opticians here are behind the times as in UK one makes an appointment at Boots or Specsavers and they do all the tests for about 25pds .

Now I need to find a reasonably priced clinic or other that does the field test otherwise its back to PhyaThai in Sri Racha !

Eyeglass sellers here are almost never medically trained optometrists (which is a very new field of training here - you get checks done by opthamologists in hospital setting here with few exceptions).

The eye air pressure test is know as not too reliable but error is normally on high side so a second check by doctor using drops is normally used to confirm readings if abnormal.  Most doctors will have access to both methods.  The CVFT is less common but some hospitals will have - I have had done at both Vejthani and Rutnin in Bangkok.

I also use Cosopt twice a day; Xalatan (Latanoprost) once in evening.  Has been controlling well.
