Cold weather causes electrical power surge - appliances in 20 homes damaged

Thai Rath reported that an electrical power surge caused by the cold weather caused appliances in 20 homes to be damaged in a sub-district of Kamphaeng Phet during the night on Monday.

 

TVs, fans, air-con units, water heaters and lighting were all affected in Nakorn Chum as 400 volts damaged the appliances, many of which had to be taken away for repair after exploding.

 

House owner Thongyoi Panjeen, 54, told the media that she was awakened at 3am by noise and the smell of burning. She rushed to activate a cut-out. In the morning she saw that her fridge was badly damaged. It had to be taken away for repairs while lighting was repaired at the scene.

 

Electrical engineers from the local authority were soon on the case and said that 20 houses were affected. They said that the cold weather had caused a shrinkage in a power cable that cause a surge in power to enter the homes.

 

A problem with earth wiring was cited.

 

Small repairs were done to electrical appliances at the homes but other more damaged items had to be taken away for repair before being returned to householders.

Exactly how cold was it ? Very suspect cause....grew up in Northeast USA and cold usually does not cause power surges and smoke appliances....

Consistency is not a factor of Thai reporting but in this case I think the electricity authority had a couple of goes to get the message across and it still did not add up.

 

Are they (not) saying that the earth to the local transformer was not up to specification?

better yet, will they pay for the damage caused by their supply like they do in other countries

cmon guys.. we all know that cold causes "shrinkage"

They are so full of it they will even believe what they say,,,Never happen ,a load of crap,,,more likely a faulty /substandard cable/ substandard workers.
