How to solve computer problems?

I have a suggestion for this forum. And maybe this should be pinned.

 

After looking at many posts, and answering some of them, I have the impression that lot's of questions here are asked by people with little knowledge and often people with just a little more knowledge try to answer.

And there are obviously also answers from people who have a lot of computer knowledge.

For inexperienced users it is often difficult to know which answers are from real specialists and which answers are just guesses from others who also don't know much more.

 

Personally I work with computers since 30 years (since DOS 3.3) and I am pretty good with them. But obviously there are still lots of things and lot of new technologies which I don't know.

If I have a question I often go to this website:

It contains questions and answers to almost all computer problems. And users can write answers to questions of other users. The big advantage of that website is that users can rate the answers of other users. The result is that there might be 5 different answers to one question but because lots of knowledgeable users vote good answers up they will show first. And bad answers are voted down. In my experience that system works very well on that website. This is why I recommend it.

For people who want to use it be aware that you should first search for questions and answers about "your" problem. Don't ask the same question again if it was answered already.

And if you want to ask a question make sure you ask a about a specific problem. Not just: my computer is slow, what can I do?

 

I think this forum on ThaiVisa should be for Thailand specific problems which are best answered by people who live here. What do you think?

 

Maybe other readers know other good websites which they want to recommend.

That's a good system. Reddit is the preeminent example of it and shouldn't be overlooked. Here the ignorants will "Like" an answer that best matches their preconceptions. This is by no means the worst forum for that sort of thing though.

But I think that while you've made a good and noble suggestion here, nobody's gonna pay any attention to it. I guess people are surfing around TV anyway and figure they might as well post their computer problem while they're in the neighborhood. Most problems are simple enough so that eventually they do get answered. Wonder what happened to Tywais, BTW. He was good all-rounder.

 

One funny thing is that an "expert" will make some false claim here then refuse to believe he might be wrong; worse, when invited to take his assertion to the heavyweight tech sites, like hardocp, stackoverflow, bleepingcomputer, or anantech, and see what the neckbeards will tell him there, won't do it. I love this forum!

Couple that with the tendency of the average forumite to expect a 'one click solution' or to muddle along with hacked and cracked software, as long as it appears to work on the surface and you have a recipe for going nowhere fast.

 

Which is exactly what happened in that thread.

I just get the job done, properly. In as few steps and as little time as possible. With simple straightforward guides. In some cases, I'll go in and do the job myself instead of getting involved in some talkfest.

 

My time is precious. I have no inclination to waste my time on idiots who think they know better and lack the simple courtesy of acknowledging that someone is actually trying to help them, free of charge.

 

Better I sit back and watch the 'experts' at work, than to waste my time in trying to make a difference.

Not just cutting and pasting a multitude of hyperlinks or ludicrously suggesting that a novice couldn't do just as good a job of installing Windows at the most experienced Thai Tech.

So much nonsense, that any novice's head would spin, instead heading for the nearest Thai tech.

 

Knowing the machine would enable the possibility of exacting step by step instructions.

Instead they are offered generic links and useless 'advice'.

I have windows 7 install-able from a USB stick. Plug it in, boot from USB, and it's done.

Just add the mobo and graphics card drivers after.

 

Can't imagine any techie does it any other way (with whatever windows version they like).

Never found any computer problem that can't be fixed in 20 minutes.

Hardware  problems  is almost always the PSU or hard drive failure, software problems is usually a virus (or registry corruption), easiest to just erase the Hard drive and re-install. (Laptops aren't generally worth fixing)

 

Restoring data which you foolishly haven't backed up, most techs won't touch, and if they do, it's gonna cost you.

Lots of computer problems have nothing to do with the power supply, HDD, malware or the registry.

Obviously you can reinstall Windows whenever you have a problem which you can't fix in 20 minutes. But then don't be surprised if your knowledge stays on your 20-minutes-plateau.

I had to find the right driver for an older DELL that the company couldn't come up with. Neither their website, nor Microsoft technicians were able to solve the driver problem. But I found a driver for a Lenovo that had the same specs and it worked.

 

   So much to your 20 minutes jobs. In very few cases is it the Power supply, be it a PC, or a notebook, a completely wrong information. "Software problems is usually a virus"? I hope that you know the difference between a Trojan horse, a file infecting virus, and a dropper?

 

  The most common hardware problems in my opinion are problems with the memory card slot connection, easily to fix with a rubber, aeeh an eraser. 

 

  Software problems are often homemade by users who believe that two Anti virus systems are better than one. Some programs just don't work together and a couple of free programs, often offered here as the super solution are CCleaner, free AVG, and other crap, I'd never put on my machines.

 

  You've shown your knowledge about computers with your sentence "Laptops aren't generally worth fixing."

 

  It's not the easiest way to erase the hard drive and re install. Anybody with a little bit knowledge would tell you to backup the system once it's running well and keep on making images, stored on an external drive.

 

  While you're still busy with your reinstall, i boot my machine with a bootable memory drive with Macrium, or Aomei Backupper on and restore my system with all my beloved programs on within 30 minutes.

Far worse is to batter the novice with some premature demand like "gimme the model number" long before it's needed, then petulantly refuse to help further until the demand is met. 

 

The word "reinstall" is certainly concise and often typed by our Reinstall Bots who know little else. Trouble is, the novice does need to know how to reinstall. And a link to simple instructions with illustrations, or to a simple video, is exactly what's needed. Reinstalling is inherently simple, really. (In the normal case--that's why it's no fun.) Yeah, already done, no need to reinvent the wheel and try to take credit for it. And some links to the cheap keys you mentioned would be needed.

   You might not know how these people receive their education and only a few of these technicians are really good. more learning by doing. They usually use a program called Ghost and install all the other programs from an often very infected memory stick, everybody else in that shop is also using.

 

   Many foreigners who come home with such an installation then experience even more problems than they had before. Many of them put Baidu Antivirus and other products on, but some of these products are basically a virus. 

 

  If you need to search for a special tool to delete such a program then you know what I mean. The user Jamjar always come up with great solutions and I think that many people could learn something from him. The message is to do a fresh install by yourself, under his, or other's instruction.

 

  Now please understand that i never wrote that all technicians in Thailand are no good, but many of them can only do certain tasks. The problem is their poor English and if there's a problem where something in English pops up they are not aware of, they usually don't know how to solve the problem.

 

  Anyway, telling people here to go to a Thai shop and let these technicians put on a cracked version with KMS, it's way better to let the person with the problem know how easy it is to download the new version of W 10 Pro with the 1709 update, then showing them how to create a bootable memory stick with Rufus and how easy it is to buy a genuine Activation key that finally gives you the "Windows is activated with a digital license." And only then, when you can see this, your system is genuine.

 

  Please don't see this post as criticism, it's just my own personal opinion when somebody else would tell me to go to a Thai computer shop. I've done that in the past and it was finally the reason for me to do all alone.

I know there are lots of bad Thai technicians, but there are also some good Thai technicians. And there are few foreign computer experts and lots of guys who know something about computers but a lot less then they think they know (this is not directed at anyone in this forum, just a general observation). Many of these half-knowledge people like reinstalling Windows, registry cleaners and lots of other utilities which are best case useless and often harmful.

I know this because I work since a long time in IT mostly with networking, databases and programming. I met too many of these half-knowledge guys who told me about all the wonderful utilities which they discovered. And when their computers have more and more problems then they find new wonder utilities to fix the problems which they wouldn't have if they would not have installed so much useless crap.

I think for many guys treat computers like cars. Open the hood and have a look at the carburetor and the distributor cap and hope you can somehow fix it. Except new cars don't have these parts anymore and by now most guys know that they won't be able to fix a car anymore by themselves. They have to visit a garage and a qualified technician. But with computers lots of guys still think they can fix them, especially with all the information on the internet - which is often crap. This is why I started this thread. If users look in the right place for qualified answers to their questions then they have a chance to fix their problem. But this works only if the answers and advice are good. Following advice from half-knowledge people makes the situation often worse - even worse than the average Thai technician...

@Argus Tuft Why is that a contradiction? We have all the time new OS and program versions and all the time new programs and new hardware. It's impossible to know all of it. Computer experts may be able to learn new technologies relative fast and they have an idea where to look even for programs they never saw before. But there is still a lot to learn and there is just not enough time to learn everything (if someone was trying to do that).

It actually makes sense to me that someone would request the brand name and model number.  If a custom PC, then you would identify the Motherboard in another way.

The thread you appear to be referring to is titled Reinstalling Windows 10, so why the talk of Reinstall Bots?

It appeared the the topic starter was unhappy with the install from the very beginning, yet one or two of the supposed helpers seemed to focus on something completely different.

More of a hindrance than a help, by the looks of it.

The irony of one of them beginning a thread titled "How to solve computer problem" is not lost on me.

Then the other actually posted on it. That brought a smile. 

C'mon fella, stay away from people's computer problems. It appears that you may not be cut out for the job.

Redirecting them to another website and to pay a computer technician is not helpful. They can do that by themselves.

They can also find YouTube by themselves.

Perhaps the person who 'fixed' his computer in the first place considered himself a specialist.

How would someone inexperienced be able to tell?

You really do not appear to have filtered your replies before posting them, because what you have been writing doesn't appear to have legs.

Perhaps if you had a friend, you could say it out loud to them before posting. At least that would give the opportunity to think twice before clicking Submit.

I didn't say it doesn't make sense. Read carefully. My point is that it's not so necessary that nothing can happen without it. Certainly a reinstall of Win 10 can happen without it. I'm not sure our brand name obsessed members realize that the motherboard can be identified any other way.

Because the OP is a naive user who may well not need any immediate knee-jerk reinstall. The Reinstall Bots were having none of that, however, and merely kept typing in the word. Perhaps it may be bound to a hotkey?

Merely because you don't really understand the issue. Knock yerself out, man. Nothing wrong with the idea TVF members learn of the existence of sites devoted more specifically to computer problems where many more real experts post. TVF's forum, infested with Reinstall Bots, somehow never makes the "best of" lists; wonder why. As I said in my opening post, however, members aren't likely to go there. Even registering is such a hassle . . . then forgetting the password . . . .

It would seem so, but you place far too much faith in them. Amazing how many of our members have barely even heard of Google. Hence the OP, having finally decided on a reinstall, had no idea how to do so: he didn't bother to look. And no Bot had yet told him--pouting because of the model number issue--so I did. After he realized the extraordinary effort and expertise required he started to pivot back to the idea of merely fixing his two problems. Now I'm not going to help with those any further either. The question isn't of "a computer technician" but which computer technician, if comes to that. I still like the idea of just cloning his old disk--which his Thai tech should have done, but ah well.

Asking here would be a start. We do have recommendations from time to time from satisfied users. Living in Pattaya, for example, I know of a tech with a great reputation, educated, and quite skillful--he's been mentioned here more than once. Specifying the task to be done, once one knows what it is exactly, really helps a lot too. 'Course you may need to stand and watch, LOL.
